Barry Bonds'

43d birthday, the effects of the San Francisco slugger's age really started to show.

Bonds got a second consecutive night off yesterday, with Giants manager Bruce Bochy holding him out of the starting lineup to rest his sore lower body.

The slumping Bonds said he is done calling himself an "embarrassment" or making any other self-deprecating remarks during his pursuit of Hank Aaron's home-run record of 755. He is four away from tying the Hammer but hasn't connected since a two-run shot July 3 at Cincinnati.

"I did everything but bite myself and spit on myself," Bonds said while sitting at his locker, referring to his postgame eruption two days earlier.

Bonds is in an 0-for-20 slump, his worst hitless stretch since 2001.

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Ben Sheets will miss four to six weeks after an ultrasound Monday revealed a partial tear of the tissue surrounding a tendon in his right middle finger.

The Kansas City Royals recalled righthander Leo Nunez from triple-A Omaha to make his first major-league start last night against the Boston Red Sox.
