will return to the rotation Thursday and come off the disabled list earlier than originally expected from surgery to remove his appendix.

Manager John Gibbons said yesterday Halladay will start at home against the Chicago White Sox.

New York Yankees centerfielder Johnny Damon was out of yesterday's lineup against the Los Angeles Angels because of recurring leg problems, but for now will avoid his first career trip to the disabled list.

New York Mets rightfielder Shawn Green said he will have more tests on his broken right foot, suffered Friday night, in an effort to avoid being placed on the disabled list.

Detroit Tigers reliever Jason Grilli and second baseman Placido Polanco both left yesterday's game against the Cleveland Indians with injuries.

Grilli was hit on the left knee by a line drive in the eighth inning. X-rays were negative.

Polanco, a former Phillie, left after the sixth inning because of a muscle spasm in his oblique.

The Texas Rangers purchased the contract of outfielder Marlon Byrd, a former Phillie, from triple-A Oklahoma and optioned outfielder Kevin Mahar to the same club.

The Kansas City Royals put righthander Joakim Soria on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation and recalled righthander Ryan Braun from triple-A Omaha.
