Calling all MLB draftnik

IF YOU ACCEPT THE premise that by showing the NHL draft on TV, anything can be shown on TV, we present ESPN's latest venture to fill dead air.

On June 7 at 2 p.m., ESPN2 will broadcast the Major League Baseball draft. Relax, you still have time to get a good seat at the bar to check out this historic event.

If you think spending your valuable time watching the NHL draft is pointless - with the stars of the show

unknown Euro players and unknown, hardy Canadian lads - how bad will the

baseball draft be?

Baseball's potential draft picks are just as obscure.

You will see each team's first-round pick. Last year, the Phillies' first pick was righthander Kyle Drabek, and in 2005, it was third baseman Michael Costanzo.

Commissioner Bud Selig said the telecast "will give fans access to see this critical function of an organization's development. This is an idea whose time has come."

Despite the watching-paint-dry potential of the broadcast, we actually think Selig has a point. ESPN will screech about it nonstop. Fans can get a look at these kids, learn about them and what their chances are of playing in the majors.

And then, fans can ridicule their favorite teams for the thorough lack of foresight exhibited in making their selections.

The Sabres' Chris Drury scored a goal with 8 seconds left to tie Game 5 against the Rangers on Friday night. The Sabres won in overtime and advanced to the Eastern Conference finals on Sunday.

We wonder: What took him so long? He has 14 game-winning playoff goals, he won a Little League World Series, a Frozen Four title at Boston U. and a Stanley Cup with Colorado. *
