Baseball Notable

National League batting champion Freddy Sanchez, out since March 6 with a sprained ligament in his right knee, isn't ready to play and the Pittsburgh Pirates are weighing whether he should go on the disabled list, even if it is for only a week.

Sanchez, who hit .344 with six homers and 85 RBIs last season, is not able to run the bases at full speed.

Cardinals. Eight-time Gold Glove-winning centerfielder Jim Edmonds took a big leap toward being ready for opening day, playing in his first spring training game yesterday. He had spent much of the spring recovering from off-season shoulder and toe surgeries.

Nationals. Washington granted former Phillies first baseman Travis Lee his request for an unconditional release, meaning Dmitri Young will be the Nats' starting first baseman.

Washington also sent righthander Tim Redding outright to triple-A Columbus, solidifying Jerome Williams' rotation spot.

Royals. Thirteen months after he left camp to deal with social anxiety, Zack Greinke has won a job as Kansas City's No. 3 starter.

White Sox. Backup catcher Toby Hall suffered a partially dislocated right shoulder when he dove for a grounder while playing first base against the Texas Rangers in Tucson, Ariz. Hall is a righthander.

Elsewhere. Hayden Penn and Kurt Birkins, pitchers who spent last season with Baltimore, were among five players sent out by the Orioles. . . . Dodgers starter Hong-Chih Kuo's fifth spot in the rotation will go to Brett Tomko while the righthander rehabilitates a sore shoulder for two to three weeks. . . . Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal (sprained left ankle) expects the results of an MRI exam today. . . . Indians pitcher Cliff Lee (strained abdomen) is scheduled to have a mound session today, the first time he will have thrown off the hill since February. . . . Yankees lefthander Andy Pettitte (back spasms) is scheduled for a bullpen session today, but another starter, righty Jeff Karstens, was pulled from a game against Detroit with a stiff right elbow. . . . Reds first baseman Scott Hatteberg, recovering from a strained groin, played for the first time in four days. . . . Blue Jays righthander Brandon League was optioned to triple-A Syracuse after losing 10 m.p.h. off his fastball.
