Philadelphia Phillies shut out Pittsburgh Pirates, 5-0, in Grapefruit League game
BRADENTON, Fla. -- A week full of tape-measure home runs gave way to some old-timey small ball during the Phillies' 5-0 victory Monday over Pittsburgh at McKechnie Field.
The Phillies chased starter A.J. Burnett and raced to that lead without so much as one extra-base hit.
They barely needed any hits at all.
The Phillies scored three runs on bases-loaded walks, another on a bases-loaded single and yet another when leadoff hitter Ben Revere singled, stole second, advanced to third on a poor throw and scored on Michael Young's groundout.
Revere's speed forced one bad throw on his steal and another when he bunted for a single to lead off the the sixth and moved to second on pitcher Wandy Rodriguez's wild throw to first.
John Lannan and three relievers combined on a one-hitter.
Lannan started and pitched to contact during a solid three-inning effort.
He allowed the Pirates' only hit -- Travis Snider's sharp ground ball that sneaked under Ryan Howard's glove and rolled to the corner for a double in the first inning.
Relievers Mike Adams, Adam Morgan and Raul Valdes followed with six combined hitless innings.
Lannan walked two but was helped by two double plays.
Shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt erased a leadoff walk in the second inning when he stabbed a line drive that short-hopped him, spun and started a double play.
Chase Utley started an inning-ending double play in the third, and Michael Young started another in the fifth.
Young, who hit his first home run of the spring Sunday, added two hits and 2 RBIs Monday.
Left fielder Darin Ruf, getting every opportunity to win a job, looked more comfortable in left field, gliding to several fly balls and running to catch a line drive.
His troubles at the plate, however, continued. He reached base three times -- was hit twice and walked -- but also popped out to the catcher with the bases loaded to end the second inning.
He finished 0-for-2 and now is 3-for-23 this spring (.130).
Cole Hamels is scheduled to make his third start Tuesday in Clearwater against the Dominican Republic, whose coaching staff includes Juan Samuel.
