New York Daily News suggests Yankees trade Granderson to Phillies for Ruf

POSTED: Monday, October 22, 2012, 10:56 AM

The dust hasn't quite settled in New York after the Yankees were swept out of the playoffs by the Detroit Tigers.

One media outlet is suggesting that the Yankees make a deal with the Phillies, trading Curtis Granderson, a power hitting center fielder who would fill a need for the Phillies, for Darin Ruf, the reigning double-A MVP.

Granderson has a $13M option for 2013, making him affordable for the Phillies, while Ruf is a 26-year-old career minor-leaguer with no real position on the Phillies. In winter ball, Ruf is hitting .276 with four home runs in eight games.

Here is what John Harper of the New York Daily News wrote over the weekend:

It's not that Granderson can't cut down on his strikeouts and get back to being something closer to the player that finished fourth in the 2011 MVP voting. It's just that I don't believe the Yankees are going to commit to a long-term, highly-expensive deal to keep him after 2013, so the time is right to trade him.

Granderson makes a lot of sense for the Phillies, who desperately need power, as well as a center fielder, and they're still very much in a win-now mode, trying to cash in before their high-priced starting rotation gets too old.

...

At age 26, Ruf is not really a phenom, having developed his power gradually after being a 20th-round pick out of Creighton. The Phillies are converting him from first base to the outfield, and scouts believe he can play a serviceable left field.

His bat could be valuable to the Yankees in a part-time role in 2013, if he proves ready, and eventually he could become a mainstay in the lineup.

The Phillies might be reluctant to deal one of their few highly-touted prospects, but some scouts, pointing to his high strikeout total (102 K's in Double-A) aren't sold that Ruf will be able to put up big numbers against major league pitching. And Granderson could be a long-term answer in center for the Phillies if they're willing to commit financially.

So what do you think? Would you make the deal?

No way. Would only consider it if Granderson had more than 1 year on his contract.

Considering the Phillies do not appear to be in tune with the skills and values of their minor league players, I would not make the deal. What the Yankees noticed was the compact and quick pwerful swing that Ruf brings to the table. Those guys play well for a long time in the majors. I would be more willing to give them DOmonic Brown, but the Yankees are too smart to take Brown. Maybe they will take Howard and we can them plug in Ruf at first and Granderson in Center field.

just what we need. Another left handed all or nothing free swinger. I'd keep Ruf over that.

I'll carry Ruf to NY and Granderson to Philly on my back. Leading the American League in home runs and leading the Eastern League are solar systems apart. Ruf is a prospect. If there is a hole he cant adjust to, major league pitching will find it. I'm excited about Ruf, but to think he's a sure thing is folly. Think Domonic Brown or a hundred other cant miss minor league stars..

A NY writer is suggesting it so what slant do you think he is taking? You don't want Granderson. HRs look guady but look further and you can see there isn't much else. Keep Ruf. Loved that short swing and if the Phils can land Olt the nicknames will fly...Babe Ruf and Mel Olt...can't beat that.

Down Town Dominic Brown? Oh nevermind. I'd like to see Ruf stay here. They need a little youth, and they could use his low salary to fill other areas of need with veterns they would have to pay up for.

I am amazed at the stuff that other sportswriters write about....and even more amazed that our sportswriters are lazy enough to recycle the story and use it again, then throw the question out there for us, the fans to rant and rave about for them. An absolutely pitiful attempt by (who the heck is this loser?) Mullin. I'm sure Monty and Amaro are sitting back in their offices just digesting all that we have to say and will base their trade scenerios on our concensus opinion. Not. Stupid, stupid, stupid on so many fronts.

Stupid pills!!! Stupid pills!!! Stop taking them Ruf showed he was the real deal - all the RBI's against the Gnats that last series - really?? Phightin's need to go young and do it from the organization - Rollins-Utley-Howard-Ruiz-Hamels. I like Ruf - he can't be any worse at LF than Pat the bat who helped bring this town a Championship - Oh how you Philly fans forget and it wasn't just his one HUGE hit in the Series. - he carried them during the Summer of 2008. 2013 Outfield - Ruf-?-Brown. That question mark shouldn't be Upton or Bourn. Take a look at what the Cards and Giants have in Center - they have real baseball players. That's what you're looking for!!! As for 3b if it ain't Longorian then go with what we got or the kid in AA. Go young!!!!

No, No, No, a gazillion times no. Too ngreat a chance that Ruf is for real. Unlike Dom, he crushed MLB pitching in his callup. 7 for his last 17 with 4 HR in Ven. A guy coming through your system is a bargain you can't pass up because of what it allows you to do elsewhere on your roster financially. Utley, Howard, Rollins, Hammels all had tremendous production when they were earning peanuts. Example - in 06, Howard earned $355K in his 58 HR 149 RBI MVP season, $900K the next. The opportunitrs that brings you to spend other money are immeasurable. If Ruf never makes it, it's still the right decision to keep him. The upside potential is toooo huge.

The all-star in every position idea doesn't work. I would take Ichiro over Granderson. Ichiro gets on base. The Yankees could get more than Ruf for Granderson.
