Carlos Ruiz activated, Placido Polanco put on disabled list
Marc Narducci
The Phillies activated catcher Carlos Ruiz from the disabled list and placed third baseman Placido Polanco on the 15-day disabled list with lower back inflammation.
Ruiz had plantar fasciitis in his left foot. He last played Aug. 2.
This season he is batting .335 with 14 home runs and 58 RBIs.
Ruiz has 353 plate appearances and needs 502 to qualify for the batting title. Yet he won’t come close to that total with 25 games left. That’s because the Phillies will gradually work him in the lineup.
“We will pinch hit him and see how it goes after three to four days might start using him and might be able to put him in couple of innings late in the game and every four to five days start him,” manager Charlie Manuel said before tonight’s game.
Ruiz admitted that he came close to shutting things down for the season.
“Last week it was real close to maybe not coming back because I tried to run and still would feel it,” Ruiz said. “In Atlanta and Cincinnati I tried to run real hard and I did not feel anything and that was big and I was so happy.”
Polanco said he doesn’t think he will play the rest of the season.
As for tonight, Ruiz is not in the lineup and neither is Ryan Howard, with Ty Wigginton starting at first base. Manuel said he felt Howard needed a rest and will be back in the lineup tomorrow.
Kevin Frandsen was in the original lineup, but was a late scratch due to left ankle soreness. He was replaced by Michael Martinez. Erik Kratz, who was originally batting eighth, has moved up to seventh.
Here is the Phillies lineup
1.Jimmy Rollins, SS
2. Juan Pierre, LF
3. Chase Utley, 2B
4. Ty Wigginton, 1B
5. John Mayberry, Jr., CF
6. Domonic Brown, RF
7. Erik Kratz, C
8. Michael Martinez, 3B
9. Cliff Lee, P
Odd... evolutionary
Chooch should just sit out the rest of the year and let his batting average stand. Its typical for players coming off of the DL to struggle at the plate for a while. Why tarnish what has been a career year for him....especially when the outcome of the games won't affect the overall season for the Phillies one way or another? SteveS11
Howard out? How in the world will he continue his record-setting strike out pace if he's on the bench? Who will make up for his 2.5 whiffs tonight? Life is so unfair, at times. gentian- Actually he looks better at the plate. More selective in pitches, etc. His defensive play is what's suspect in my opinion. dogman5
Melky has 501 plate appearances, just 1 short of the 502 needed. Wonder what they would have done if he had 502? P Even
steves11, chooch doesn't care about numbers. He isn't Reyes. He wants to play and besides, he doesn't qualify for the batting title anyway.
So long Polly. It's a shame your Phillies career is probably over now. palmyra21
gentian, you're an idiot. an out is an out.
P Even, there's a rule that if you end the season at 501 PAs, you can add an 0-1 so you qualify for the batting title. It's a shame steroid man qualifies but chooch can't. palmyra21
That means Mini Martinez with his .120 avg is still here? Please don't let him sniff the field anymore! Play eight if u must! kissamiazz
actually palmyra your the idiot. An out is not an out, many times in baseball do outs actually score runs. Ever heard of a sacrifice fly? Only strikeouts, do not produce runs. mcghee19
Glad to see Polly gone. Not happy to see Wiggy batting 4th, or anywhere else in the lineup. wo_fat
"The MAN" has returned!! Great. Hope Carlos picks up where he left off. Awesome year for Chooch. dogman5
nice AAA lineup, should still win
F Melky and Braun... and Pujols You TRY and tell me that incredible hulk is not juiced... pls WFChamps
Nobody in the orthopedic field will be honest enough to tell Chooch that a complete tear of the plantar fascia from running the basepaths wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to happen, in fact, the fascial release surgery is quite similar. drbob1
drbob:you are SO right...tiny tears from heel to foot should NOT be fooled with...To boot, that .335 looks ALOT better than the 20 points lower he's likely to end with...Ruiz turns 34 in January, with one year left on his deal...Unless the Phillies are thinking of dealing him next year (doubt that seriously), I'm thinking his he may see action at third base some in 2013,before a serious decision about a 35 year old player takes place next Winter. bearsfriend
Only in the Bizarro World of Ruin Tomorrow Jr. is a 34-year old Carlos Ruiz a serious third base candidate. I so hope that by November there are two less men with five letter last names (and the 1st, 3rd, and 5th letters are vowels)still in charge of areas they have FUBAR. dasher
