Howard No Longer Home vs. the Braves

Ryan Howard's home run against the Braves Tuesday was just the sixth in his last 43 games against the Braves. That pales even more so when you compare it to how he had hammered Atlanta earlier in his career.

Though 2009, Howard had homered 32 times against the Braves in 84 games. Moreso, he was averaging more than an RBI a game. And try out his averages vs. ATL in that time: .341, .424 OBA, .728 Slg.

Here are Howard's numbers against Atlanta over his first six seasons and since 2010:

         2004-09        2010-12
 Games 84  43
 Record 49-35  23-20
 Batting Avg. .341  .218
    Hits-AB 103-302  36-165
 On-Base Pct. .424  .282
    Walks 44  14
    Strikeouts 77  50
 Slugging Pct. .728  .370
    Total Bases      220  61
    Doubles 17   5
    Triples
    Home Runs 32
 RBI 87  21
 Runs 60  19

Howard currently ranks #40 among 1B in terms of OPS. Those next to him among 1B include the great Adam Lind and Hector Luna. Lind makes $5 mill this year.

I wonder how these same numbers compare to other teams. He has dropped off like this against the majority of teams is my guess.

Atlanta pitching has improved since then, right?

I'd say it's a combination of his lack of adjustment and growth as a hitter along with time missed due to his injury and the obvious point a poster made that Atlanta's pitching has improved. Not to mention that 2010 was binocular gate they can't steal signs as easy as they used to.

@4thand10: I'm no big fan of Howard, but he has more HR and RBI than Luna in fewer games, and a better ratios of HR and RBI to games played than Lind. All despite the last few weeks basically being his spring training. Think before you drink.

There should be wagering on how many times Howard will strikeout in any game. Twice a game sounds about right.

He has been immersed in sports statistics since the early 70s, when his father (long-time sports writer, broadcaster and the Daily News’ Buck The Bartender), would take him into the Bulletin newsroom overnight in the summer and let him update the Phillies statistics in a little, black spiral notebook. But things have changed tremendously in the decades since … He now uses a big, black spiral notebook. Email him at boopstats@phillynews.com.
