With two days left in online balloting for baseball's All-Stars, Carlos Ruiz trails Buster Posey by 887,040 votes. He will not be starting in the game.
It's not a surprise; Ruiz has spent much of the voting process stranded in third place behind Posey and Yadier Molina. But he ranks third in batting average (.354), third in on-base percentage (.421) and sixth in slugging percentage (.561) across the entire National League. Those figures are tops for all NL catchers.
Ruiz does not have a national profile like Posey or Molina, and that hurts in a fan voting system.
The entire roster will be announced Sunday and it's highly likely Ruiz is named as a reserve. He has never made an All-Star team.
Voting totals:
1. Buster Posey 3,335,982
2. Yadier Molina 3,119,530
3. Carlos Ruiz 2,448,942

It's better this way. Instead of playing 3 or 4 innings as the starter, he'll catch one inning, two at the most. EL Zorro
Forget about the best stats among NL Catchers, he has some of the best stats of all the catchers in baseball right now. But this is what happens when the fans are responsible for the majority of the voting. Heck, Ryan Howard is 5th in 1st base votes. ESFjellin

to be honest, though Ruiz has better stats than the others right now, Molina's offensive stats are not far beyond, Molina is superior at throwing out runners, has been performing at an All-Star leve for far longer, and is probably deserving ... fans get all riled up about someone having a good half-year but until he shows he can do it a whole year or many yeears it doesn't override the incumbent warbiscuit- That's what the All Star votes comes down to...who has done this longer. And if you look at this year, Chooch is actually performing better defensively that Molina is. All around, Chooch is looking like the SS and GG winner at C, at least in the first half anyways.

The entire team needs to go on vacation at the all-star break and decide if they really want to play baseball or stay on vacation like they have this season so far. joeynick
Chooch is the only Phillie that deserves to go Justicek
Chooch, Papelbon and Hamels will probably be the All-Star reps for the Phils this year. ESFjellin
Just validates that good guys do finish last. I used every email name closely related to me to vote the max 25 votes. Wish more fans would have gotten on board. If anyone deserves recognition throughout this dismal season, it's Carlos. He's one resilient and productive ballplayer. dogman5

It's a shame but the national media contribute to Ruiz not being popular enough to get votes. Gelb: In response to your tweet about Howard not coming back in July-Did you really think he would be back before September? AvoidSundanceVacations
Chooch is an All-Star with Phillies fans!!!!!!!!!!!!!! road515
chooch should be an all star, his stats prove it. butch61
