Game 53: Chooch in; Victorino out

POSTED: Friday, June 1, 2012, 3:41 PM

Centerfielder Shane Victorino, who had started the Phillies first 52 games, was out of Friday’s lineup against the Miami Marlins after receiving a cortisone shot in his right hand earlier in the day.

John Mayberry Jr. will start in place of Victorino.

According to Victorino, the hand has been bothering him since spring training.

“I said it’s been two months so we decided to give me some relief,” Victorino said before Friday’s game.

Even after getting the shot, Victorino said his goal was to play on Friday, but was told by the medical staff it would be better that he sit out.

“I plan on playing tomorrow,” Victorino. “I wish I could be in the lineup tonight."

A switch-hitter, Victorino said it only bothers him when he bats lefthanded. This season he is batting .227 lefthanded in 163 at-bats and .333 in 45 at-bats righthanded.

RUIZ RETURNS

After not starting any of the three games in New York due to right hamstring tightness, Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz is back in the starting lineup for tonight’s game at Citizens Bank Park against the Miami Marlins.

Ruiz is batting cleanup. Hector Luna is also in tonight’s starting lineup as is John Mayberry Jr.

Shane Victorino is out after receiving a cortisone shot in his right hand earlier in the day. He said he expects to return Saturday.

The Phillies (27-25) have won five of seven following Wednesday’s 10-6 win at Citi Field against the New York Mets.

The Marlins (29-22) are coming off a three-game home sweep of the Washington Nationals.

Here is the Phillies lineup

4. Carlos Ruiz, C

5. Ty Wigginton, 1B

6. Hector Luna, LF

Great to see Hector Luna with his 28 career major league games starting in Left field. Remember Pitching and no experience in left field win games. According to Baseball Reference he never played the outfield in 919 career minor league games.

Wow. 5 straight hitters with some power. This lineup is absolutely scary compared to some others we've had.

Shane finally sent to sit in the corner and study pop-up and LH golf-swing films?

The lineup doesnt look bad, but kyle is who im worried about. Ill bet he gives up two bombs tonight. I think we will win but it will be a close one......like a 5-4 bring our so called relief pitchers in so i can chew off the rest of my nails kinda game!!!! If you catch my drift!!!!!

I fully expect an explosion of offense tonight. lots of power as another user pointed out. Mayberry needs to get going. Luna is a pleasant surprise. Wigs is heating up. If only the vets at the top of the order were more consistent, this could be a powerful lineup. Home game, Buerhle can get hit around....

here's an idea Vic - bat righty ALL THE TIME. Your RH BA can't be worse against righties than your weak .227 as a lefty.

Why not move Freddie Galvis up to lead off, push JRole down...what does it hurt, FG's OBP is higher, he is faster and can take a walk once a millenium?

I predicted kyle to give up 2 homers tonight. But i think we will get three off their pitcher. we will win a close one......watch and see!

Hey Bird.... we're talking about Uncle Chollie here, he who is ruled by a veterans only "thought" ( Charlie doesn't actually think ) process. Where other teams ( see Flyers ) by necessity learned that rookies with proper guidance can not only contribute, but actually win games for you, he is suspect of anyone without ten years in the MLB. I blame him for Dom Brown's woes, and the fact JRoll has attitudinal problems when asked to bat anywhere but leadoff. I agree with you, give Freddy a shot at one game as a leadoff hitter. JUST ONCE! Let's see what happens then. In the meantime, I consider this a year of misfires for all franchises in town, except the Sixers, a team and a sport I could care less about. Go Phightins!

On TV, they made it sound like Luna was playing CF which worried me but now that I see he's in LF, I'm a little less worried. Has he ever played the OF? But he has a hit with 2 RBIs so I guess it's on of those patented Manuel "brilliant move".

Mayberry needs to be GONE! And give Pence a break here....he's had to carry the long ball load all season. He's worth his weight in gold. Amaro needs to correct the left-field situation IMMEDIATELY - cannot afford to let it linger with all the other injuries
