Phillies Minor League Report: Tyler Cloyd pitches gem in IronPigs' win

Lehigh Valley IronPigs – Triple A

The IronPigs topped the Syracuse Chiefs, 4-1, at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, Pa.

Right-handed starter Tyler Cloyd (5-9, 4.89 ERA) pitched a gem for the victory. Cloyd went the distance, giving up only one run on three hits and a walk while striking out seven. The run came on a solo home run in the fifth. He needed 116 pitches (80 strikes) to earn the complete game.

Trailing 1-0 in the fifth, The IronPigs answered in the bottom of the inning. With one out, left fielder Derrick Mitchell and center fielder Tyson Gillies hit back-to-back singles and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from Cloyd. Second baseman Pete Orr delivered two-out, two-run single to put Lehigh Valley up for good.

Orr would scored in the eighth to add to his solid game from the leadoff spot. He finished 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored.

Shortstop Freddy Galvis (2-for-4 with a run scored and a strikeout) and right fielder Steve Susdorf (2-for-3 with a walk) also had multi-hit games.

The win lifted the IronPigs to 64-61. The series continues Thursday as righty David Buchanan (2-0, 1.29 ERA) takes the ball for Lehigh Valley.

Reading Fightin Phils – Double A

The Fightin Phils fell to the Bingamton Mets, 4-3, at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading, Pa.

In the opening inning, the Fightin Phils struck first on the scoreboard. Center fielder Zach Collier drew a one-out walk and moved to third on third baseman Miakel Franco's single to set up first baseman Jim Murphy, who delivered sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.

Right-handed starter Brody Colvin immediately squandered the lead. Colvin allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and six walks over four innings. He settled for a no-decision as the offense was able to tie the game in the third.

Collier and Franco were at it again in the frame. Collier hit a RBI double to score shortstop Troy Hanzawa, who reached on a leadoff single. Franco notched a sacrifice fly to score left fielder Albert Carwright, who singled.

The game would remain tied until the eighth, when right-handed reliever Kyle Simon (1-5, 4.96 ERA) allowed the winning run to score.

Franco (2-for-2 with an RBI and a walk) and Hanzawa (2-for-4 with a run scored and a strikeout) were standouts on offense.

The loss dropped the Fightin Phils to 52-69. The teams will look to win the series in the finale on Thursday. Righty Jonathan Pettibone will make a rehab start with Lehigh Valley.

Clearwater Threshers – Class A-Advanced

For the second day in a row, the Clearwater Threshers split a doubleheader with the Daytona Cubs at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach, Fla.

In the first game, the Threshers lost, 5-1.

Right-handed starter Perci Garner (6-6, 4.30 ERA) was pounded for five runs (four earned) on four hits, including a home run, and three walks over 1 2/3 innings to take the loss.

Clearwater avoided the shutout with a run in the fifth. With two outs, third baseman Harold Martinez doubled and scored on catcher Logan Moore's single.

The Threshers exacted revenged in the second game with a 2-0 win.

Three Clearwater pitchers combined for a two-hit shutout. Right-handed starter Luis Paulino (5-6, 5.03 ERA) picked up the win for his two-hit, five-inning outing. Relievers Ryan O'Sullivan and Ken Giles each pitched a perfect inning to preserve the shutout.

Peter Lavin tripled in the third and scored on Aaron Altherr's sacrifice fly for the first run of the ballgame.

A wild pitch allowed Martinez, who reached on a single, to score in the seventh.

The Threshers are now 58-60 after the doubleheader. The five-game series wraps up Thursday. Clearwater has not announced a starting pitcher.

Lakewood BlueClaws – Class A

The BlueClaws were crushed by the Kannapolis Intimidators, 10-2, at CMC-NorthEast Stadium in Kannapolis, N.C.

For the second consecutive day, the Lakewood pitching staff allowed double-digit runs to cross the plate.

Left-handed starter Ryan Demmin allowed two runs in the first, but ran into a lot of trouble in the sixth when Intimidators recorded an eight-run frame. Demmin was charged with five runs on eight hits and a walk over five-plus innings.

Righty Delvi Frnacisco couldn't stop the damage and gave up five runs on three hits and two walks to complete the sixth inning.

Trailing 2-0 in the third, second baseman Alejandro Villalobos and first baseman Willie Carmona combined to cut the deficit in half. Villalobos led off the inning with a double and scored on Carmona's single.

Catcher Chace Numata hit an RBI single in the eighth when the game was out of hand to score third baseman Mitch Walding, who doubled.

The BlueClaws fell to 46-73. Lakewood will look to avoid a sweep as right-hander Jeb Stefan (4-6, 3.80 ERA) is slated to make the start.

Williamsport Crosscutters - Class A-Short Season

The Crosscutters were blanked by the Auburn Doubledays, 3-0, at Bowman Field in Williamsport, Pa.

Five hits was al the Williamsport offense could muster. Catcher Andrew Knapp, right fielder Dylan Cozens, first baseman Logan Pierce, second baseman Sam Dove and shortstop Malquin Canelo all singled.

Riight-handed starter Julio Reyes (1-2, 3.86 ERA) suffered the loss. He allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits and two talks while striking out three over four innings.

The Crosscutters fell to 25-28. The two-game series concluded Thursday as righty Shane Martin (3-3, 4.05 ERA) will take the hill for Williamsport.
