Phillies Minor League Report: Domonic Brown homers in first rehab start
Here's how the Phillies' minor-league teams fared on Monday, August 5:
Lehigh Valley IronPigs – Triple A
The IronPigs lost to the Charlotte Knights, 8-5, at Knights Stadium in Fort Mill, S.C.
Left-handed starter Greg Smith (6-2, 2.50 ERA) put the IronPigs in an early hole. He surrendered five runs on 10 hits over 3 1/3 innings for the loss. He punched out three batters.
Righty Mike MacDougal came on in relief of Smith, but didn't perform much better. Three more runs crossed the plate on three hits and two walks over 1 1/3 innings on MacDougal's watch.
First baseman Cody Overbeck hit his second home run in as many nights in the second inning. It was his 18th homer of the season. He struck out in his other three at bats to go along with a walk.
With two outs In the fifth, left fielder Steve Susdorf and designated hitter Josh Fields recorded back-to-back RBI hits to make the score 7-3.
Second baseman Pete Orr added a two-run single in the seventh, but Lehigh Valley wouldn't score again.
Right fielder Leandro Castro went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, two runs scored and a strikeout in the leadoff spot.
The IronPigs are now 59-58. Southpaw Adam Morgan (1-5, 4.05 ERA) is slated to make the start for Lehigh Valley when the series continues Tuesday.
Reading Fightin Phils – Double A
The Fightin Phils (48-65) were idle on Monday.
Reading will begin a three-game series Tuesday against the Harrisburg Senators. A starting pitcher has not been announced yet.
Clearwater Threshers – Class A-Advanced
The Threshers' game against the St. Lucie Mets was canceled due to rain on Monday.
Clearwater (54-55) will have off day Tuesday before starting a three-game set against the Daytona Cubs on Wednesday.
Lakewood BlueClaws – Class A
The BlueClaws fell to Hagerstown Suns, 8-4, to extend a losing streak to six games at Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown, Md.
Phillies left fielder Domonic Brown began his rehab assignment Monday with Lakewood. He started left field, batted third and played the entire game. He finished the game 3-for-5 with a home run, two singles, two RBI and two runs scored.
In the first inning, Brown gave the BlueClaws the lead with an RBI single. Then, he led off the third inning with a solo home run. In his third at bat, Brown had an infield single for a three-hit game. He rounded out his plate appearances with a ground out to the second baseman in the seventh and ended the game with a ground out to the shortstop.
Right-handed starter Miguel Nunez (8-8, 4.62 ERA) took the loss after giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits over five innings.
The Lakewood offense could only manage six hits in the game.
First baseman Art Charles recorded an RBI double in the first to score Brown.
Shortstop Angelo Mora's single and center fielder Carlos Tocci's double were the BlueClaws other hits.
The loss dropped the BlueClaws to 44-67. The middle game of the series is Tuesday and Lakewood will hand the ball to right-hander Jonathan Musser (1-6, 5.57 ERA).
Williamsport Crosscutters - Class A-Short Season
The Crosscutters (24-22) had an off day Monday.
Williamsport opens a three-game series against the Tri-City ValleyCats on Tuesday as righty Yacksel Rios (2-1, 4.44 ERA) gets the start.
