Phillies Minor League Report: Sebastian Valle homers twice in Reading's win

Here's how the Phillies' minor-league teams fared on Monday, July 22:

Lehigh Valley IronPigs – Triple A

The IronPigs fell to the Rochester Red Wings, 3-1, at Frontier Field in Rochester, N.Y.

Lehigh Valley had trouble putting together offense en route to the loss.

Left-handed starter Adam Morgan (1-5, 4.73 ERA) needed 71 pitches to get through four innings and take the defeat. He allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks.

Trailing 3-0 in the eighth, Lehigh Valley was able to get on the scoreboard. Third baseman Cody Asche notched a two-out, RBI single to plate catcher Cameron Rupp, who hit a leadoff single.

Asche went 3-for-4 with a strikeout to raise his average to .288.

Designated hitter Josh Fields also had a multi-hit game with a 2-for-4 performance.

The loss dropped the IronPigs below .500 to 51-52. Right-hander Ethan Martin (10-5, 4.60 ERA) will take the ball when the series continues Tuesday.

Reading Fightin Phils – Double A

The Fightin Phils edged the Binghamton Mets, 5-4, in a rain-shortened game at NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton, N.Y.

Reading stormed out to a 4-0 lead after three innings of play.

In the first, second baseman Albert Cartwright led off the game with a bunt single. First baseman Jim Murphy would knock Cartwright in with a two-out single for a 1-0 lead.

An inning later, catcher Sebastian Valle hit a leadoff home run for extend the lead.

Another leadoff long ball, this time by center fielder Zach Collier in the third inning, gave the Fightin Phils a 3-0 lead. Valle added a sacrifice fly in the inning to give right-handed starter Seth Rosin (8-4, 4.46 ERA) a 4-0 cushion.

However, Rosin blew the lead by giving up four runs in the fifth. He finished with four runs allowed on eight hits and a walk over five innings. Rosin did pick up the win.

Valle's sixth-inning solo shot, before the rain came down to end the game in the seventh, gave Reading the win.

Valle went 2-for-2 with two home runs, three RBI and two runs scored to raise his average to .216. Valle now has 11 home runs this season.

Third baseman Maikel Franco went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a strikeout in the win.

The Fightin Phils improved to 43-57 on the season. Southpaw Jesse Biddle (4-9, 3.19 ERA) gets the start for Reading when the series continues Tuesday.

Clearwater Threshers – Class A-Advanced

The Threshers were on the wrong end of a no-hitter and lost to the Jupiter Hammerheads, 5-0, at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Fla.

Three Jupiter pitchers combined for the no-no. Starter Angel Sanchez (six innings), Colby Suggs (two innings) and James Nygren (one inning) allowed only two walks and struck out five.

Third baseman Matt Tolbert broke up the perfect game by drawing a walk in the fourth inning. Second baseman Carlos Alonso drew the other walk in the sixth. Neither runner made it past first base.

Right-handed starter Severino Gonzalez (1-3, 2.35 ERA) suffered the loss, but had a strong outing. He allowed a run on six hits and two walks while striking out seven over six innings.

Righty Daniel Carela gave up three runs in the seventh to let the game get out of reach.

The loss put the Threshers back to .500 at 48-48. The series is scheduled to continue Tuesday. Clearwater has not announced a starting pitcher.

Lakewood BlueClaws – Class A

The BlueClaws were routed by the Rome Braves, 10-2, at State Mutual Stadium in Rome, Ga.

Right-handed starter Jeb Stefan (3-5, 3.72 ERA) was torched and took the loss. He surrendered eight runs (two earned) on 10 hits, including a home run, over five innings.

Trailing 10-0 in the eighth inning, Lakewood avoided a shutout with a two-run frame. Second baseman Alejandro Villalobos led the inning off with a single and moved to third on catcher Chad Carman's single. Villalobos would score on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, shortstop Jonathan Roof singled home Carman.

The BlueClaws fell to 40-58. Lakewood will look to split the series in the finale on Tuesday with right-hander Jonathan Musser (1-5, 5.40 ERA) on the bump.

Williamsport Crosscutters - Class A-Short Season

The Crosscutters' game against the Lowell Spinners was canceled due to rain Monday.

The game will not be rescheduled.

Williamsport will begin a three-game series on the road against the Auburn Doubledays on Tuesday. Right-hander Shane Martin is slated to make the start for the Crosscutters (17-15).
