John Lannan shuts down Nationals in Phillies' 3-2 win
The Phillies beat the Washington Nationals, 3-2, at Citizens Bank Park in the opening game of a four-game series.
Left-handed starter John Lannan scattered four hits and two walks over eight innings against his former team to earn his second win of the year. Lannan spent his first six seasons with the Nationals. He struck out four.
Center fielder Ben Revere went 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored in the leadoff spot. He raised his average to .300.
The Phillies took the lead in the first inning with a two-run frame. Left fielder Domonic Brown singled home Revere with one out and Darin Ruf drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk for the 2-0 lead.
Shortstop Jimmy Rollins delivered an RBI single in the sixth inning.
Closer Jonathan Papelbon allowed two runs in the ninth, but nailed down the win. It was his 19th save of the season.
The series will continue on Tuesday when southpaw Cole Hamels faces righty Taylor Jordan.
