Phillies Minor League Report: Severino Gonzalez pitches Reading to victory
Here's how the Phillies' minor league teams fared on Sunday, July 6:
Lehigh Valley IronPigs – Triple A
The IronPigs were held to five hits in a 4-0 loss to the Indianapolis Indians at Victory Field in Indianapolis, Ind.
Right-handed starter Brad Lincoln (4-4, 4.11 ERA) put his team in an early hole as he allowed four runs (three earned) in the first three innings. Lincoln gave up six hits and three walks while striking out five over seven innings.
Second baseman Rusty Ryal had the IronPigs' only extra-base hit, a double in the sixth.
Righty Phillippe Aumont struck out two in a perfect eighth.
The IronPigs (43-46) will send lefty Greg Smith (7-5, 3.99 ERA) to the mound as the series continues Monday.
Reading Fightin Phils – Double A
The Fightin Phils cruised past the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 6-2, at The Diamond in Richmond, Va.
A five-run third inning, led by right fielder Peter Lavin (3-for-5 with two runs scored, a strikeout and a caught stealing) and shortstop KC Serna (3-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base), powered the victory.
Right-handed starter Severino Gonzalez (5-9, 4.71 ERA) got back into the win column with a strong eight-inning effort, his longest of the season. It was Gonzalez's first win since May 17, a span of nine starts. He allowed two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out seven.
Center fielder Aaron Altherr knocked in two runs to help the cause.
The Fightin Phils (35-50), losers of 17 of their last 19 games, will host the Trenton Thunder for a four-game series. Southpaw Hoby Milner (5-4, 4.07 ERA) is slated to start the opener on Monday.
Clearwater Threshers – Class A-Advanced
Play was suspended in the third inning as the Threshers led the Brevard County Manatees, 2-0, at Space Coast Stadium in Melbourne, Fla.
Making his first rehab start, Phillies lefty Cliff Lee threw two scoreless innings, allowing a hit and striking out two.
Shortstop J.P. Crawford hit a two-run home run, his third of the season.
The game will continue on Monday before a regularly scheduled game.
The Threshers are 5-10 in the second half, 22-61 overall.
Lakewood BlueClaws – Class A
The BlueClaws used a four-run sixth inning to beat the Delmarva Shorebirds, 6-2, at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Md.
First baseman Zach Green (3-for-4 with a double and three RBI) and third baseman Mitch Walding (1-for-4 with a two-run home run) knocked in a combined five runs to fuel the offense.
Right-handed starter Yacksel Rios (3-0, 3.11 ERA) remained undefeated, holding the Shorebirds to two runs on five hits and a walk over seven innings.
The BlueClaws (6-12 in second half, 33-54 overall) travel for a three-game set against the Hagerstown Suns. A starting pitcher has not been announced for the opener on Monday.
Williamsport Crosscutters – Class A-Short Season
The Crosscutters powered past the Auburn Doubledays, 4-1, at Bowman Field in Williamsport, Pa.
Left fielder Jiandido Tromp and second baseman Derek Campbell homered in the victory.
Tromp's two-run blast was his team-high sixth of the season.
Campbell went 3-for-3 with a solo shot and two doubles.
Right-handed starter Preston Packrall (1-0, 4.86 ERA) picked up his first professional win. Packrall surrendered an unearned run on two hits and a walk in five innings.
The Crosscutters (12-11) will begin a two-game series on the road with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. Lefty Matt Imhof (0-0, 3.00 ERA) takes his turn in the rotation on Monday.
