Phillies Minor League Report: Ken Giles notches third save, pushes ERA below 1.00 with IronPigs

Here's a rundown on how the Phillies' minor league teams fared on Monday, May 26:

Lehigh Valley IronPigs – Triple A

The IronPigs rallied from a three-run hole to beat the Norfolk Tides, 5-4, at Harbor Park in Norfolk, Va.

Right-handed starter Barry Enright (3-2, 4.06 ERA) struggled early and served up two home run balls, but kept Lehigh Valley in the game. The offense handed Enright the win, after he held the Tides to four runs on eight hits in 7 1/3 innings.

The IronPigs used two home run balls to supply their runs.

Trailing 3-0 in the fifth, second baseman Ronny Cedeno evened the score with a three-run shot, his first of the year.

Right fielder Tyler Henson put the IronPigs up for good with a two-run blast in the eighth. It was Henson's fourth homer.

Righty Ken Giles lowered his ERA to 0.93 and notched his third save with the IronPigs, allowing a hit and striking out one in 1 2/3 scoreless innings.

In seven appearances with the IronPigs, Giles earned two wins and has given up one run, four hits and five walks while striking out six in 9 2/3 innings.

Adding his time in Reading, Giles now carries a 1.09 ERA with 10 saves and has allowed just four runs (three earned) on 12 hits and 10 walks while striking out 35 over 24 2/3 innings.

The win lifted the IronPigs to 26-24. The teams will play a doubleheader on Tuesday. Righty Sean O'Sullivan (1-4, 4.50 ERA) will start the first game, while a second starter has not been announced yet.

Reading Fightin Phils – Double A

The Fightin Phils were blanked by the Akron RubberDucks, 9-0, at Canal Park in Akron, Ohio.

Reading's bats took the day off on Memorial Day as the offense could only muster three hits.

Right-handed starter Mike Nesseth (1-4, 9.57 ERA) was torched for six runs on seven hits and two walks in just 1 2/3 innings.

Despite the loss, the Fightin Phils still managed to take three of four from the RubberDucks and are now 28-20. Reading will host the Trenton Thunder for a three-game set, beginning Tuesday. Righty Severino Gonzalez (4-4, 5.02 ERA) takes the hill for the opener.

Clearwater Threshers – Class A-Advanced

The Threshers were idle on Monday and remained a Florida State League-worst 10-39.

Clearwater will welcome the Fort Myers Miracle for the first of a four-game series on Tuesday. A starting pitcher has not been announced yet.

Lakewood BlueClaws – Class A

The BlueClaws were shut out by the Greensboro Grasshoppers, 4-0, at NewBridge Bank Park in Greensboro, N.C.

The offense was held to eight hits and just one extra-base hit in the loss. Shortstop J.P. Crawford went 1-for-4 with a double and a strikeout.

Designated hitter Samuel Hiciano (2-for-3) had the only multi-hit game.

Right-handed starter Tyler Viza (2-5, 3.88 ERA) suffered the loss, giving up three runs on eight hits, including a home run, over six innings.

The BlueClaws dropped to 19-29. The series continues Tuesday as Lakewood hands the ball to righty Mark Leiter (4-3, 4.53 ERA).
