TAMPA, Fla. - David Buchanan, who has a 2.25 ERA this spring, was told he would not make the opening-day roster, but he will fly north with the Phillies for exhibition games with the Pittsburgh Pirates Friday and Saturday at Citizens Bank Park.

Buchanan will start the season at triple-A Lehigh Valley. On Saturday he will follow Roberto Hernandez into the exhibition game.

The Phillies will need a fifth starter on April 13, so Buchanan will continue to be evaluated for that spot.

"I wanted to come in here and make an impression and open us some eyes and I feel like I did that," Buchanan said Tuesday. "I feel like I proved myself that I am ready for the next level. I had a blast every day in camp."
