Penguins end Phantoms' playoff run

WILKES-BARRE – Chris Minard snapped a 1-1 tie in the second period last night to send the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to a 3-1 victory at the Wachovia Arena and eliminate the Phantoms from the AHL's Calder Cup playoffs.

The Penguins took the best-of-seven East Division finals, four games to one, and advanced to the Eastern Conference finals. They will face the Portland Pirates, who beat the Providence Bruins, 5-4, last night to win the Atlantic Division finals, 4-2.

Minard's game-winner against the Phantoms came at 12 minutes, 20 seconds of the second period. Darren Reid had pulled the Phantoms into a 1-1 tie earlier in the period.

The Penguins added an insurance goal 4:01 into the third period on a score by Tim Wallace off a rebound.

Phantoms goalie Scott Munroe, who took the loss, stopped 20 of 23 shots. The Penguins' John Curry won his fourth straight in the nets, stopping 22 of 23 shots.
