Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins put Phantoms in must-win mode

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins took a 3-1 lead in the East Division finals after a wild 8-4 win over the Phantoms in an American Hockey League game last night at the Wachovia Center.

The Phantoms outshot the Penguins, 36-32, but the Penguins broke the game open with five goals in the second period.

The Penguins struck first, taking a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Tim Brent and Mark Ardelan. But a Phantoms' goal by Darroll Powe cut the lead to 2-1 going into the first intermission, and Jared Ross scored again 19 seconds into the second period to tie things up at 2.

Then the Penguins' offense caught fire, leading the Phantoms to pull goalie Scott Munroe midway through the period. Munroe's replacement, Michael Teslak, didn't fare much better, giving up three goals on 10 shots. Munroe allowed five goals on 22 shots.

Boyd Kane tallied a second-period goal for the Phantoms and Pete Zingoni scored in the third, but the damage had been done. The Penguins can knock out the Phantoms in Game 5 tomorrow night in Wilkes-Barre.

Meanwhile, Game 7, if necessary, has been moved up a day and is scheduled for Monday in Wilkes-Barre. *

Inga Saffron: The development sagas of Benjamin Franklin Parkway and Independence Mall are awfully similar. Each started out with the aim of concentrating Philadelphia's cultural power in one part of the city. And after that imperial ambition was thwarted, each remained opposed to bringing commerce into its vision of grandeur.

With the introduction of two new coffee shops, this is finally changing.
