The Phantoms melted down Saturday night at the GIANT Center, losing 9-0 to the Hershey Bears.
With their eighth straight win, the Bears secured their spot atop the AHL standings and padded their league-best goal total. They also became the first team to ever score nine goals on the Phantoms. The loss set a Phantoms record for largest margin of defeat, which previously was six goals, done five times before.
- HERSHEY, Pa. - The Phantoms were walloped by the Hershey Bears, 9-0, last night at the Giant Center. The Bears, owners of the AHL's best record and most prolific offense, earned their eighth consecutive win. They became the first team ever to score nine goals against the Phantoms in a game.
- Jason DeSantis and Jeffrey Szwez scored first-period goals, and the Phantoms held the lead the rest of the way last night in a 4-1 victory over the Springfield Falcons at the Wachovia Spectrum.
- In hockey, tough guys are an archetype. They have traits and a persona all to themselves. Matt Clackson, a rookie forward on the Phantoms, is living that character on the ice. Off the ice, however, is another story. When he left Western Michigan University after 3 years to turn pro, he had a 3.96 grade-point average. He might throw punches for a living, but Clackson is a bright guy.
