American Pharoah wins Kentucky Derby

Louisville, Ky. - The horse that got the majority of the hype in the final days leading up to the Kentucky Derby ran right to the accolades. American Pharoah, last year's 2-year-old champion, sat a dream trip just behind the speed and eased by stablemate Dortmund and Firing Line in the stretch, to win the Derby by 1 length.

Jockey Victor Espinoza won his second straight Derby and third overall.

Trainer Bob Baffert won his fourth. Owner Ahmed Zayat won his first after finishing second three times.

Firing Line was second and Dortmund finished third.

The top three finishers were first, second and third all the way around the track. Dortmund led, followed by Firing Line and American Pharoah. It stayed that way until the stretch when Firing Line passed Dortmund before getting passed by American Pharoah.

The winner, favored at 5-2, paid $7.80 to win. The 18-10 exacta paid $72.60. The top three were not really flying home. The winner ran the mile and a quarter in 2:03.02 after Dortmund set moderate fractions on the front.
