The Head of the Schuylkill Regatta, held annually since 1971, is expected this year to feature more than 8,500 competitors and 1,931 boats. Here are some details:

When: Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Practice is Friday, noon to 5:30 p.m.

Where: On the Schuylkill. The 2.5-mile racecourse starts above the Strawberry Mansion Bridge and ends just above Boathouse Row.

Who: The rowers are divided into these categories: scholastic, collegiate, open, masters, veterans, and adaptive. At least 29 states, 12 countries, and 267 club teams are to be represented.

Format: The boats are started sequentially and race against the clock. The fastest is named Head of the River.

Awards ceremonies: Saturday, 1:30 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., at the Festive Tent near the Three Angels Statues on Kelly Drive.

If you go: There is no charge to watch the races. Free shuttle buses are to run frequently from the complete length of the course to offsite parking. Golf carts are also available from Boathouse Row to the Regatta Festival Tent launch area and the St. Joseph's Boathouse launch area.
