For decades, the NCAA barred freshmen from competing in all sports. That changed for football and basketball in 1972.

Penn State athletic director Sandy Barbour told triblive.com that she considers it a "critical question" worthy of discussion, but she supports allowing freshmen to compete.

Florida won't be penalized for former assistant football coach Joker Phillips' having impermissible contact with a recruit. The NCAA said the Gators handled the situation appropriately by taking corrective action and self-imposing penalties.

NFL The Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers said they are planning a shared stadium in Carson, Calif., a suburb of Los Angeles, if they do not get new stadiums in their hometowns. And St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke is part of a venture that wants to build an 80,000-seat stadium nearby, in Inglewood.

The Rams and the Raiders fled Southern California after the 1994 season. The notion that the area might be getting used - again - as a negotiating wedge by NFL teams came up Friday at a public celebration in Carson, where a community group including labor unions is pushing the joint Chargers-Raiders stadium.

A day after Seattle general manager John Schneider said he wouldn't be "shocked" if Marshawn Lynch retired, coach Pete Carroll said he wants his top runner to make another Super Bowl run next season.

The 28-year-old back, who has a year remaining on his contract at $7 million, reportedly is contemplating retirement because he wants a long-term deal.

ARENA LEAGUE In a trade with the Los Angeles Kiss, the Soul acquired first-team all-league linebacker Beau Bell for fullback Derrick Ross and future considerations. In a recent players' poll by the AFL office, Bell was picked as the league's No. 4 player.

TENNIS Second-seeded Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland was knocked out of the Open 13 by Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine after a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 loss in the quarterfinals in Marseille, France.
