Freedoms lose to Kastles in playoffs

Washington advances to league championship with win in Eastern Conference finals.

THE FREEDOMS' season ended last night with a 21-16 loss to the Washington Kastles in the Eastern Conference finals of World TeamTennis at George Washington University's Smith Center.

The Kastles will play the winner of last night's Springfield Lasers-San Diego Aviators match for the league title on Sunday.

The Freedoms cut the deficit to 8-7 when Taylor Townsend defeated Martina Hingis, 5-2, in women's singles.

In mixed doubles, Hingis and Leander Paes downed Liezel Huber and Marcelo Melo, 5-2 to increase Washington's lead to 12-10. Hingis and Anastasia Rodionova then defeated Townsend and Huber, 5-1, in women's doubles to put the Kastles ahead, 17-11.

The Freedoms finished with a win in men's doubles as Frank Dancevic and Melo defeated Paes and Bobby Reynolds, 5-3.
