3 share lead in season's first LPGA major

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. - Playing partners Suzann Pettersen and Na Yeon Choi took advantage of perfect morning conditions to share the first-round lead with Jodi Ewart Shadoff in the Kraft Nabisco Championship.

Finishing before the temperature climbed into the low 90s on Thursday, Pettersen and Choi had bogey-free rounds of 4-under-par 68 at Mission Hills. Ewart Shadoff matched them late in the afternoon.

Anna Nordqvist and afternoon starter Amy Yang were a stroke back at 69 in the LPGA Tour's first major championship of the year.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Matt Bettencourt and Peter Tomasulo shot 5-under 67s to earn the lead after the first round of the Texas Open at the TPC Marriott, holding off a field that includes world No. 2 Rory McIlroy.

McIlroy, who entered the tournament as a final opportunity to prep for next week's Masters, opened with an even-par 72 and was tied for 45th.

Matt Shaffer, director of golf-course management at Merion Golf Club, will travel to Washington for National Golf Day.

Shaffer plans to talk to Congressional members, on behalf of all golf-course superintendents, about the commitment to responsible environmental practices and sustainability. He will discuss cutting-edge methods employed at Merion, which will host the U.S. Open in June.
