Ochoa fires 65 to lead by a stroke in France

EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France - Lorena Ochoa shot a bogey-free 7-under-par 65 yesterday to take a 1-stroke lead after the first round of the Evian Masters.

Ochoa, 26, started with a birdie on the first hole at the Evian Masters Golf Club and added six on the back nine. Ahn Sun-ju, Candie Kung and Angela Park trail by a stroke.

PGA Tour

OAKVILLE, Ontario - Mike Weir shot a bogey-free 6-under 65 for a share of the lead with Anthony Kim and Eric Axley during the suspended first round of the rain-plagued Canadian Open. Only half the players finished their round at Glen Abbey.

Champions Tour

TROON, Scotland - Greg Norman labored to a 4-over 75 in the opening round of the Seniors British Open to finish 7 shots behind leaders Bruce Vaughan and Eduardo Romero. Norman bogeyed six of the first 10 holes and was 6 over before he finally birdied the par-4 13th. He birdied the final hole at Troon with a pitch to three feet.

European Tour

NAKHABINO, Russia - Joakim Backstrom opened with a double bogey on his first hole but shot a 7-under 65 to share a four-way lead after the opening round of the Russian Open.

Backstrom was tied with David Carter of England, Roope Kakko of Finland and Fredrik Henge of Sweden at Le Meridien Moscow Golf and Country Club.

SHOAL CREEK, Ala. - Andrew Yun won the final two holes of regulation to tie the match, then beat top-seeded Jorge Fernandez Valdes in 21 holes to advance to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Boys' Junior Amateur. The 17-year-old from Chandler, Ariz., earlier had beaten Jeffrey Kang of Fullerton, Calif., 3 and 2.

Robert Galbreath Jr. of Huntington Valley, Montgomery County, won twice early but was eliminated in the third round. He completed a match postponed Wednesday by beating Seth Reeves of Duluth, Ga., 5 and 4, then defeated Philip Choi of Orlando, Fla., 7 and 6. Galbreath then lost to Emiliano Grillo of Argentina, 6 and 5.

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Heavy rain caused the postponement of the second round of match play in the U.S. Girls' Junior Championship at the Hartford Golf Club.
