There's another Carli Lloyd to root for at the Olympics

Olympics fans in the Philadelphia region have rooted for Delran's Carli Lloyd for a long time. But the U.S. women's soccer team's shocking loss in the quarterfinals last Friday has left us without one of the Games' most recognizable names. Or has it?

Olympics fans in the Philadelphia region have rooted for Delran's Carli Lloyd for a long time. But the U.S. women's soccer team's shocking loss in the quarterfinals last Friday has left us without one of the Games' most recognizable names.

Or has it?

If you haven't heard yet, there's another Carli Lloyd representing Team USA in Rio de Janeiro. This one plays for the women's volleyball team. She's from Bonsall, Calif., a suburb of San Diego.

The Americans are currently preparing for a quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday against Japan. They've won silver at the last two Olympics, and are in search of their first ever gold.

Galen Tomlinson coached Lloyd in volleyball and track when she was a child. He also guided Lloyd through her childhood after her father died when she was just four years old.

Lloyd went on to play college volleyball at the University of California-Berkeley, where she was contemporaries with U.S. women's soccer star Alex Morgan. But Lloyd wasn't all that into soccer, and by her own admission, still isn't.

"I'm awful at soccer," she told TeamUSA.org before the Olympics started. "I don't really even understand the sport that well."

Lloyd is, however, plenty familiar with the South Jersey Carli Lloyd.

"People always talk about her when they hear my name, so I feel like she's in my daily life," she said. "I watch her fire and it's cool."

This year's Olympics is the sixth Summer Games in which the United States team has had two players with the same name. NBC Olympics researcher Nick Zaccardi compiled the full list here.
