Wallace will join Celtics, report says

Detroit Pistons forward Rasheed Wallace has agreed to a two-year contract with the Boston Celtics, the Boston Globe reported last night on its Web site.

The former Simon Gratz High star will turn 35 in September. Wallace averaged 12.0 points and 7.4 rebounds for the Pistons last season.

Wallace is expected to sign with Boston on Wednesday, the first day that NBA free agents can sign contracts.

Citing NBA front-office sources, ESPN.com reported that point guard Jason Kidd, 36, has agreed to re-sign with the Dallas Mavericks. The three-year deal is worth more than $25 million, according to the Web site.

 

Women's basketball

Connecticut's Tina Charles scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the U.S. women's basketball team (4-0) to a 75-67 win over Poland (2-2) at the World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia.

 

Horse racing

Tim Rooney, owner of Yonkers Raceway, was inducted into the Harness Racing Hall of Fame last night along with Tom Crouch and Alan Leavitt in Goshen, N.Y.

Rooney is a brother of Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney.

Based at Kentuckiana Farm in Georgetown, Ky., Crouch is the breeder of 1990 Hambletonian champion Harmonious and 1997 Pacing Triple Crown winner Western Dreamer.

Leavitt's Walnut Hill Limited in Lexington, Ky., is home to Deweycheatumnhowe, winner of the 2008 Hambletonian, trotting's most prestigious race.

 

Swimming

Triple Olympic gold medalist Jason Lezak will skip the world swimming championships and instead compete in Israel's Maccabiah Games, which begin July 13, in tribute to his Jewish heritage.

 

Soccer

Loic Loval had a goal and an assist, and David Fleurival also scored to lead Guadeloupe past Panama, 2-1, in the CONCACAF Gold Cup opener for both clubs in Oakland, Calif.

In the second game, Luis Miguel Noriega scored his first international goal on a penalty kick in the 45th minute as Mexico defeated Nicaragua, 2-0.
