Rachel Alexandra to run in Mother Goose Stakes

Preakness winner Rachel Alexandra will be back to the races on June 27 at Belmont Park. After beating the colts, including Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird, in the Preakness, Rachel will race against fillies in the Mother Goose Stakes.

Rachel has been training at Churchill Downs since she won the Preakness. She will be going to Belmont Park early next week. Whether she will race against males again this year is unclear as her schedule beyond the Mother Goose has not been announced.

Nicanor wins again

Nicanor was the 2-5 favorite in an allowance race at Delaware Park yesterday. In front all the way, Nicanor, ridden by Rosie Napravnik, won the race by 1 3/4 lengths. While the race was not as visually impressive as the runaway, 15 1/4-length win last month, it was never in doubt.

"We are not exactly sure where we may run him next," Matz said. "We want to take our time and see how he comes out of this race. But we were very pleased with his race today. But at this point, there is a possibility his next start might be in the [July 18] Virginia Derby [at Colonial Downs]." *

Barbaro's full brother, Nicanor, was so good in his May 13 grass debut that it was hard not to imagine the colt in stakes races soon. Trainer Michael Matz opted for the more conservative route, but that could soon be changing.

Meanwhile, Brinkley was asking nurses: "Am I going to be able to play football again?" Brinkley, who still holds the city-league record for rushing, had just been signed by the Chargers.
