Hanna threatens Delaware Park's Owners Day

Delaware Park offers its annual Owners Day this afternoon with full fields in 13 races and elevated purses, but Tropical Storm Hanna could crash the party.

Three stakes, including the $200,000 Endine Handicap (Grade III), give the card plenty of class, but numerous turf races are in jeopardy with heavy rain in the forecast.

Among those turf races is the $100,000 George Rosenberger Memorial, with 14 fillies and mares entered, though many likely would be scratched with a switch to the main track.

The Endine features Sweet Hope, who finished second to the terrific juvenile champion Indian Blessing in her last start in the Test Stakes at Saratoga for trainer Larry Jones.

Others in the six-furlong sprint are Graeme Six, Cash's Girl, and the unbeaten Elope.

Elope romped by nearly 12 lengths in her second career start at Saratoga, and Ramon Dominguez again will be aboard.

Dominguez was fifth in the standings at the Spa and is 38 winners in front at Delaware Park, despite spending the last six weeks competing in upstate New York.

The $100,000 Owners Day Handicap offers a trio of outstanding older runners.

Mister Trieste, trained by Steve Asmussen, was impressive in taking an allowance test at Delaware in July.

Won Awesome Dude is coming off a victory in the Claiming Crown at Canterbury in Minnesota, and Solar Flare is home after chasing the amazing Commentator in the Whitney.

Big Brown at Monmouth. The Florida Derby, Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Haskell winner will return to the grass next Saturday at Monmouth Park.

Trained by Rick Dutrow, Big Brown romped in his career debut a year ago at Saratoga. He will use the $500,000 Monmouth Stakes as a final prep for the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic on Oct. 25 over a synthetic surface at Santa Anita.

A good-size field is likely for the Monmouth Stakes, with 35 runners nominated for the 11/8-mile test.

Philadelphia Park offers a similar race the same day, the $250,000 PTHA's President's Cup at the same distance, also over the turf.

Next for Curlin. Last weekend's Woodward winner will compete Sept. 27 in the Jockey Club Gold Cup over 11/4 miles at Belmont Park.

His connections have yet to decide whether he will face Big Brown in California.

War Pass retired. A broken ankle has forced last year's juvenile champion into retirement.

The speedy colt was undefeated as a juvenile and led throughout in last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Monmouth. He competed with less success this season.

New assistant at Delaware. Jerome Doro has been named assistant racing secretary at Delaware Park.

Doro, who once worked for trainer Tony Dutrow, spent the last eight years as a racing official in Maryland and Virginia.

Turfway Park. The $100,000 Fall Championship today in Kentucky offers an automatic berth in the $500,000 Breeders' Cup Marathon on Oct. 25.

Jade's Revenge, a winner on Polytrack at Keeneland, is the favorite on the synthetic Turfway surface.
