Cat Manzi and Eric Goodell were injured in a crash in the 12th race, which began when Goodell's horse, Fake Denario N, tumbled to the track. Three other horses and their drivers were involved in the accident. The 13th race was canceled.
Mike Tanner, the track's director of racing operations, said the drivers were placed on backboards and taken by ambulances to Crozer-Chester Medical Center for evaluation. He said both drivers were conscious on the track when they were transported. Tanner declined further comment as he awaited word from the hospital.
Brian Sears and Tim Tetrick also were involved in the accident but walked away, apparently unhurt. None of the horses appeared to be injured seriously.
Earlier on the card, which included $2.3 million in purses, Hambletonian runner-up Crazed won the $500,000 Colonial for 3-year-old trotters by 51/4 lengths in a track-record 1 minute, 53.2 seconds for trainer Frank Antonacci Jr. and driver Tetrick. Celebrity Secret was second, and Holiday Credit was third.
"I can't describe it," said Bob Rudolph of Vineland, N.J., who shares ownership of the horse with the Lindy Racing Stable and Gary and Ellen Hoffman. "I never would have dreamed this."
Badlands Nitro, co-owned by Chadds Ford's John Celii, won the $500,000 Battle of the Brandywine for 3-year-old pacers by two lengths in 1:50.2. He was driven by Sears for trainer George Teague Jr., who is among the colt's owners.
Tug River Princess won the $350,000 Valley Forge for 3-year-old filly pacers by 31/4 lengths in a track-record 1:50.2 for driver John Campbell and trainer Ross Croghan.
