Philadelphia Park (Race 8) - Post 3:22 p.m. today. $250,000, 1 , 3YO & up
1. Barcola, jockey Kendrick Carmouche, odds: 2-1
2. Bureaucratic, jockey Shaun Bridgmohan, odds: 10-1
3. Three in the Bag, jockey Mario Pino, odds: 3-1
4. Solemn Promise, no rider, odds: 5-1
5. Phil the Power, jockey Tony Black, odds: 12-1
6. Evening Attire, jockey Jose Espinoza, odds: 9-5
The unknown here is the distance. Nobody really knows which of these horses will last at 12 furlongs. What is known is that Barcola almost certainly will be in front. And if every horse starts to tire late, the best place to be is in front. Last out, Barcola led into the stretch in a Grade I before getting passed by the 2007 Horse of the Year. Curlin is not in this race. Three in the Bag has won his last two by a combined 24 1/4 lengths. He figures to be right behind Barcola early in the race. Evening Attire is a phenomenon. The distance does not appear to be an issue. But he will be way, way behind early in the race.
DJ's picks: 1. Barcola. 2. Three in the Bag. 3. Evening Attire.
Belmont Park (Race 9) - Post 5:15 p.m. today. Grade I, $300,000, 1 1/4 mi., 3YO fillies
2. Acoma, jockey Julien Leparoux, odds: 2-1
1. Little Belle, jockey Rajiv Maragh, odds: 1-2
3. Never Retreat, jockey Mike Luzzi, odds: 8-1
4. Flaming Slew, jockey Eibar Coa, odds: 15-1
1-a. Music Note, jockey Javier Castellano, odds: 1-2
Music Note won the Mother Goose by staying wide and out of trouble, while favored Proud Spell was stuck inside and got into lots of trouble. Still, this is a serious filly, winning her last three by a combined 20 3/4 lengths. Acoma also has won three straight since losing her debut. On paper, she had no chance in her last race, but improved her lifetime best performance by about 10 lengths. Little Belle finished second to Proud Spell in the Kentucky Oaks and won the Grade I Ashland. So Music Note and Little Belle make a rather strong Godolphin entry.
DJ's picks: 1. Music Note. 2. Acoma. 3. Little Belle.
