(Matt Gelb / Inquirer Staff)

Which team is the biggest threat to the Phillies’ chances to win the NL East for the sixth straight year?
Atlanta Braves.
Miami Marlins.
Washington Nationals.
New York Mets.

CLEARWATER, Fla. — All is quiet at the Phillies complex on the eve of the first formal workout. Most of the pitchers and catchers are here. Some threw long toss. Others spent the morning in the weight room.

Jonathan Papelbon just finished tossing with Joel Pineiro and will address the media shortly. Papelbon, not surprisingly, has drawn a large media crowd from Boston and New York.

Roy Halladay, per usual, got his work in early. He left around 10:30 a.m. in one of his latest projects. Halladay is a car enthusiast and dabbles in restoring muscle cars.

Yes, he's smiling.

Baseball is here.

Cool hot rod - the kind of car I craved when I was a kid (my parents made me get a '60 Ford Falcon as my first car. Grrr.) Roy H is definitely the coolest Roy since Campanella and I'm looking forward to seeing Hot Rod Halladay win 20 with a few shutouts in the mix. Drive carefully Roy and let's go Phils! I've got a good feeling about this season. But then again, I have since 1972. Every once in a while, my feeling was right, starting with '75-'76. Big payoff in '80 and an amazing bonus in '93. Good or bad, the Phils are my team - and I've lived in Florida for the past 7 years. At least I get to catch a Spring Training game every now and then. BrightHouse Field is a good place to see the team take shape. See you there soon!

Ilike the idea that Pinero was there early. Somehow I think he may be the 5th starter and not Joe.

Yeah, the headline says driving in style and there's no mention of what kind of car, etc.

He's such a badass. I'm actually amazed that there weren't any comments as follows: maybe he should spend less time driving his hot rod and worry about getting in-shape and improving a team that's gotten "worse" every year since 2007.

Did he buy that car from Herman Munster?

(to anybody about to get their knickers in a bunch, relax, it's a joke.
Halladay has earned the right to drive a tank onto the field of CBP.)

And I collect Parker fountain and ball pens! It is good to have a hobby like Doc has as you need to have some focus.

Nah, guys, it's a Heinz 57 or a Rolls Kinardly. It rolls down one side of the hill, and can hardly make it up the next one...

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Follow him on Twitter here.

Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
