NEWARK, N.J. - For now, no news is some news for Flyers fans.

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren released a statement just a few minutes ago regarding goaltender Ray Emery:

"The MRI study and X-Rays on Ray's hip are still being looked at. We hope to have more information in a day or two."

No more, no less.

Holmgren, attending the funeral of Maple Leafs' general manager Brian Burke's son, Brendan, in Canton, Mass., probably wasn't in a position to say much more.

As reported in Tuesday's Daily News, Emery could require surgery on a possible torn labrum in his hip.

The MRI was done on Monday. More than 24 hours later, the Flyers don't have any answers.

That means one of three things: the results were inconclusive, the results were unfortunate for the Flyers, or Emery is fine and will stun us all when he plays Wednesday night here in New Jersey.

I'm going to bet on the second option, while the Flyers are almost definitely looking for a second opinion.

Why would I say that?

As Holmgren said on Monday - and reported in the above article - Emery was slated to skate Tuesday and "push it hard." Emery didn't skate at all on Tuesday at the Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees. He declined to address the media about his injury.

Brian Boucher was the only goaltender taking shots from Riley Cote, Ville Leino and the assistant coaches.

The best bet is that Michael Leighton will be starting in net tomorrow against the Devils, his fourth straight start. Overall, Leighton is 9-3-1 as the Flyers' starter this year. The Flyers beat the Devils, 3-2, on Monday night in the first game of this home-and-home series.

WEATHER UPDATE: The Flyers and Devils game will almost certainly be played as originally scheduled on Wednesday night, despite forecasts calling for 14-20 inches of snow in downtown Newark, N.J. The Flyers are currently en route (as of 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday) to North Jersey and NHL rules dictate that the game should be played as scheduled when both teams are in a given city, outside of extraordinary circumstances. Whether the referees will arrive on time could throw a wrench into the schedule: Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and Newark/JFK/LaGuardia all have massive flight cancellations in anticipation of the storm. In fact, Newark Int'l Airport is already closed for tomorrow. Rest assured, though, you will get your Flyers fix in Thursday's Daily News as we're already on-site.

God this training staff has a lot of questionable history. We finally got rid of the goaltending coach. It's time to clean house with the training staff. Lindros was right.

tech--a torn labrum is very very common among butterfly style goaltenders--the hip is not really designed to move that way that ofter and with that much pounding--but i do agree that they seem to have an abundance of groin, abd hernias, and hip injuries...

You dont blame the training staff for a goalie who is out of shape and ahsnt played a real season in almost 3 years. Bye Bye Emery, should have gotten Halak

Yeah Homer, let's give a guy an extension who keeps having to be out with long-term injuries this season. We will sign him and he will end up retiring due to injuries, Emery will be the next Mike Rathje and put a dent in our cap room.

Has anyone else noticed that Leighton is playing great? Most nights he has gotten the start he's been the best goalie on the ice. I wouldn't mind finding out if he can keep it going.

Could we please end the Emery era. He's not worth keeping - mostly because he's not very good, but also because he has had two major injuries in his first season with the team. Leighton has a .925 save percentage with the Flyers. Let him keep playing!

Better start looking for another goalie willing to play for $1 million next year. Does anyone realize that this team has 15 players signed next year (Boucher being the only goalie) for $48 million towards the cap which is supposed to drop to $55 million? We can't move any of the players either because they all have no trade clauses or their youth that we want to keep like JVR and Giroux. Oh year, and the Flyers have no draft picks in the first two rounds next year so that's awesome. As much as I like the Flyers, I have to wonder, What's the point of carying about this team?

flyers goaltending has been good for the most part all year but does anyone else think that if they kept mike knuble, their record would be much better?

Leighton is playing well, but there is a reason he has played for five teams and Carolina placed him on waivers. He was horrible at the beginning of the season. I hope he can play this way for the rest of the season, but history says he will not.
