Niners Show No Interest in Sheldon

POSTED: Thursday, May 21, 2009, 10:28 AM

You’re the San Francisco 49ers. You’ve just lost one of your starting corners, Walt Harris, to a torn ACL that will cost him the ’09 season. You need an experienced replacement.

Paging Sheldon Brown. Paging Sheldon Brown.

If I had been the Niners, the first thing I would’ve done after seeing Harris’s MRI was put in a call to the Eagles and see what they wanted for Brown, whose very-public unhappiness over his contract situation last month led to a trade request.

Yet, according to sources in both organizations, the Niners have not contacted the Eagles about Brown’s availability.

Instead, they are bringing in 32-year-old free agent Dre Bly today for a look-see. Bly was released by the Denver Broncos in February.

Your thoughts, boys and girls?

San Fran does not want to give up the draft picks for a good cornerback who is on the down side. It is just that simple.

Shouldn't trade Sheldon unless they get blown away with a high pick. Hobbs is decent, but can't cover man2man. Sheldon is better than him. If we trade Sheldon, we only have 2 CB's that we know can play in this league every down - Samuel & Hobbs. Hanson looks like a nice young player, but if one of those first 2 guys gets hurt, can he play every down on the outside? No one knows yet. Add in the fact the Eagles like to play nickel/dime a lot AND you're going into the season with a rookie Def. Coordinator - we're better off with 3 solid CB's and Hanson & Co. off the bench. This defense is better with Sheldon Brown. He seems to have chilled out. Keep him.

Sheldon is in no position to pull a "Lito". He has not been to two pro bowls. He has been solid and steady, but not an elite player. He knows he cannot forfeit an entire season and get a $7 million/year contract as Lito did. Sheldon is NOT the nickle - he's the starter. Last year, Sheldon hardly left the field - Asante Samuel played fewer downs than Sheldon did. Ellis Hobbs brings the added ability to return kicks - he led the AFC last season with over 30 yards/return. As for Bly, though he is 32, he was elite in his prime - one of the 3 or 4 best CB in the league. Sheldon has 4 years left on his contract. He has been a solid performer every time he's been called on. And in Dawkins' absence, his leadership will be key. And yes, he WILL provide leadership, because he knows that when he turns 31, his leadership he provides this year will be his calling card for a new contract. That will be his stock-in-trade, and he knows this. There are very few players for whom the Eagles would trade Sheldon: Boldin (they tried that), an elite D-end like Peppers (though they'd have to give more than Sheldon). The Eagles know that Sheldon is worth more than his annual pay, and Sheldon knows he is in a terrible bargaining position to force the issue. Vernon Davis has been a complete bust, and has issues with motivation and attitude. Other than going public with his financial discontent, Sheldon has given nothing less than 100% for the Eagles. Vernon Davis doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as someone with Sheldon's work ethic and positive contribution. For the past five years, all of us have turned the TV on for game 1 KNOWING that Sheldon would be starting at CB, which is actually MORE than we can say for Lito, given his injuries. I don't remember anyone griping about Sheldon's position being written in stone every August for half a decade.

The Eagles aren't trading Sheldon Brown. The rumor about Brown being offered for Boldin was nonsense and still hasn't been confirmed by anyone yet a week later. He's not going anywhere. Get over it.

There's alot of time left before the season starts. If I was the Eagles I wouldn't be in a hurry to trade Brown... who knows, maybe Samuel and Hanson collide in the first practice and both blow out kness... And if I'm the 49ers... well why not look at free agents? Costs them nothing but a plane ticket.

I would love to see Brown stay an Eagle but if he wants out then I hope they don't just give him away. If the niners's aren't interested, doesn't that give you some indication about what other teams think about Brown's stock. Suck it up Sheldon and continue to collect about 2 million per year here in Philly.

Only the Eagles organization can determine where Sheldon's head is. If his head is back in the game I would recommend the Eagles keep him. He is an asset and there is no reason to assume that he is going to pull a Lito. topwonk is right. Depth is a key factor in championship teams and Sheldon gives us that.

they're already paying nate clements a ridiculous amount of money at CB, why would they want to bring in a guy who wants to get paid more and is half the player?

Keep Sheldon. How many D backs to you need in todays NFL? All (the good ones)you got! Sheldon has to at least try to pry some dough out of the eagles. If you were in his shoes wouldn't you?

T3rdEye.... I don't think it's the Eagles organization that is negative. I think it's the media that does whatever they can to create news and stir the pot. Something small always get's blown up by the media.

Don't the Eagles organization tire all of you out? It's like work: it is an everyday thing, mostly negative, and gets maybe a week off.

Ellis Hobbs was a nice pickup for the Birds. Still, there is a reason Belichick let him go. Latest reports, if you believe at all in such things, have Sheldon and Banner smoothing over their issues. Let's not be in a hurry to give Sheldon away. He will look awfully good in Eagles green, even if he starts the season as a backup or nickel, should Asante or Hobbs go down. My guess is that he will not tank the season as Lito did, and the line seperating the top teams from the also rans in the NFL is a very thin one. Depth is often times the difference.

I think it makes sense for the Niners to check out Bly first to see if there's anything left in the tank. Signing a free agent won't cost them a pick. That being said, if Bly isn't the answer, they should certainly look into Brown. Regardless, just because both sides deny discussions, doesn't mean they aren't talking. Come on now.

The Niners have been pretty clueless lately - didn't they have our Nickel back a few years ago? They let him go for nuthin'...

All these smart aleck remarks about Brown are interesting, given the fact that he's been one of the most consistent players we've ever had at the position. I still remember the name Izell Jenkins. Otis Smith was garbage when he was here, too. We let go a very good punt returner, Allen Rossum, because he could not play cornerback. We didn't get two good corners until Troy Vincent and Bobby Taylor, and we were fortunate to have Sheldon and Lito follow them ... You never mis your water 'til your well runs dry.
