Jamie Moyer underwent succesful Tommy John surgery to repair the ulnal collateral ligament in his left arm today in New York, according to a press release issued by his foundation. The surgery was performed by Dr. David Alchek.
“Thanks to the advances in surgery many pitchers have made successful returns to the mound after undergoing surgery similar to mine," Moyer is quoted as saying in a statement. “I look forward to the challenge of making a comeback for the 2012 season. I love this game and I still believe I can be a successful pitcher in the big leagues. Prior to the injury I was feeling great and throwing well. I want to thank everyone for the kind words and good wishes.”
Moyer, who injured the elbow in July with the Phillies, was pitching in the Dominican Republic in winter ball when he suffered the latest injury in his third start.
Best wishes for a quick and successful recovery. Look forward to seeing you pitch in 2012. rolenfan- hey jamie, the golf course is a callin for ya...
If Moyer were 37 instead of 47, no one would be questioning him. The fact is, though, Moyer put up numbers similar to a lot of No. 4 and 5 starters in the major leagues last year. He was 9-9 with 4.84 ERA.
He had an ERA plus of 84. That's very similar to the year he had when he was 37, in fact: 13-10 with an ERA plus of 83.
You're telling me there are no teams that could use a guy like Moyer? Are you telling me that Kyle Kendrick, for instance, is definitely better than Moyer? Muckrakers
I hope he's with the Phillies in some capacity in 2011 as some sort of pitching coach. He's great to have around the pitching staff. See ya soon, Jamie! FireTMac&Wheeler!
Lotta mileage on that arm so, it was about time for an overhaul. With his smarts and a new arm, heck, he might win 15 games. Go Jamie, see ya in 2012!!! flyerdup
If he wants to pitch until he is 60 and there is a place somewhere for him then it's nobody'd business but his. Good luck!! Russ- Jamie is not the prototypical pitcher. I think this article really did a good job of analyzing his success and consistency: http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/being-jamie-moyer/. I think chances are he'll be back in 2012. As someone noted he still can pitch as well as many #4/5 pitchers in the league. I think he figures he's come this far, why not shoot for that 300 mark? s
Well, good luck to Jamie, if he thinks he's going to make a comeback at age 49 in 2012. If anyone can do it, he can. But I don't forsee any team giving him a guaranteed contract up front. He'll have to sign on to a minor league deal and prove he can still pitch. SteveS11
