The Eagles denied a report from earlier today that the team had made an offer to extend the contract of backup quarterback Kevin Kolb.

A team source said the report is "completely 100 percent false." A league source also labeled the report as "erroneous."

Jeff Nalley, Kob's agent, had no comment when reached tonight.

Gary Gobb of gcobb.com cited a source in the report, which also claimed that someone from the Eagles front office had told Kolb over a year ago that he would take over for starter Donovan McNabb in approximately a year's time.

Kolb, like McNabb and third quarterback Michael Vick, is heading into the final year of his current contract. Speculation over the Eagles' quarterback situation has already reached an elevated state, although there isn't likely to be any movement until free agency opens on March 5. There could be some clarity by March 9, however, when the team must decide if its to extend Vick with a $1.5 million bonus or release him.

It is worth noting that Eagles coach Andy Reid has gone on the record as saying that McNabb is his starting quarterback for next season. Joe Banner has reiterated that Reid has the final say on personnel decisions, but the team president has seemingly left the door open, saying earlier this week on the team's Web site that "there are different levels of complexity about the decision. We'll have to sit down and figure that out."

Meanwhile, there have been numerous let's-toss-anything-against-the-wall-and-see-if-it-sticks reports from various outlets on the future of McNabb-Kolb-Vick. Nothing has stuck because there haven't been any final decisions made.

We're not normally accustomed to responding to conjecture, but this one seemed worth confirming/refuting/clarifying. We'll try and have something more substantive once it occurs regarding the Eagles' quarterback situation -- or that of any Eagles player, for that matter -- in the coming weeks.

This report is no different from the original report and says nothing. Who is the team source? Without that your report means nothing either.

They should sign Kolb immediately and stop screwing around.

It doesn't matter. We all know the Eagles will do just enough to make the Playoffs, not to win a championship.

"We're not normally accustomed to responding to conjecture..." Thanks for that. I laughed so loud a coworker had to come in and see what was going on. or are you drawing a disctinction between philly.com responding to it or reprting it themselves?

lol... It is funny. Many of you Eagles fans think that because McNabb is no longer with the team, that this team is magically going to win a superbowl. Well the reality of it is that Andy Reid won't win a superbowl. Our defenses never play well in big games. While Mcnabb deserves some of the blame, he certianly isn't the reason this team hasn't won a superbowl. Our defenses are always undersized and when it matters they NEVER EVER EVER come through. In the big games our playcalling always sucks as well and the coach never has our teams ready to play. And finally we always have a major weakness that gets exposed, such as our linebackers. So you see everyone, it makes no difference who the QB is. We are to cheap, undersized on defense, and bad playcalling will prevent us from winning the superbowl as long as Andy Reid is running the show.

I'm glad it's false. I really like this guy. He needs to be able to compete with McNabb for the starting job. Give him a shot!!!

It's fallacious to say that gcobb's report is refuted when YOU DON'T NAME YOUR SOURCE. It's not an official statement from the team if the source is not named.

The credibility of Brookover and McLane is on the line with this one. If gcobb is right that's means you "source" with the Eagles is of little value.

As always, the Iggles play their cards close to the vest...as they SHOULD! Conjecture, speculation, extrapolation of past comments,"wishin' & hopin'..." Are ALL just exactly THAT!Until contracts are signed, deals made, and rosters SET.....I'm afraid that this kind of garbage is all you can get this time of year. Oh well.....it's better than nuthin'!

SIGN NO ONE. if they are trying to trade one or all of the players, don't show your hand. Make your moves, and then sign what is left. No one is going anywhere and you have to drive up the costs. To sign one of these guys to an extension makes the others expendable and teams are less likely to delievr top dollar for them. BTW. CHRISM is spot on with his analysis of the Eagles in the big games. No one comes to work that day, but sel centered Owens. Lol. he knew he was playing for a new contract.

This is comical at this point. 2010: McNabb starts and they trade Vick 2011: Kolb starts, McNabb is traded. End of story. Go Phillies!!

After so many years of seeing this front office operate, we all know full well what's going on here. Andy said he expects Donovan to be his QB next year, and I believe him. That said, Kolb seems like he could be a play-maker, and they all know this. Banner sounded non-committal not because he wants to push Don out the door, but simply because it was apparent after this year that the team is not as close to championship-caliber as previously thought. What this means is that, while they don't want to part with Donovan, all things being equal, they also acknowledge the trade value he'd have, and that the transition to Kolb might be worth it if McNabb could land them players that vastly improve other sagging areas of the team. I think it's really this cut-and-dried.
