At Arkansas, Jason Peters was the roommate of Eagles right guard Shawn Andrews, brother of Stacy Andrews, the Eagles’ other major offensive line acquisition this offseason. Shawn Andrews, often an isolated figure in the locker room, now will dress alongside his brother and his close friend, which has to be a better environment for him.

But Shawn might not find it all that much fun to compare paychecks; in 2006, he signed an extension that locked him up for 10 seasons, during which he will make about $35.5 million.

When Shawn Andrews missed the start of training camp last season with what turned out to be severe depression, there was speculation that he was unhappy with his contract. Agent Rich Moran denied that at the time, but the speculation continued, as Andrews missed the final 14 regular-season games and the playoffs with a back injury.

Shawn Andrews did not respond to messages from the Daily News this past weekend. Moran texted yesterday that Andrews would “be at work” for offseason conditioning at NovaCare on Tuesday. He did not comment on how Andrews felt about his deal.

“He’s excited about me being here and his brother being here,” Peters said, when asked about his ex-roomie. “I think he’s ready to go.”

Team president Joe Banner said the Eagles understand that paying close to $100 million to a pair of offensive tackles might make other players compare their compensation unfavorably; he said teams have to keep that in mind before making big moves, “but you can’t have your hands tied, and not be able to move forward.”

It's hard to see how Andrews has a lot of leverage here. He is coming off a missed season. The Eagles got to the NFC Championship Game with Nick Cole at right guard, and they thought he played well. If the Birds hadn't signed Peters, and had ended up moving Andrews to left tackle, as they apparently were thinking of doing, that would have changed things -- Andrews could legitmately say he was playing left tackle under a right guard contract. Left tackles are the highest-paid offensive linemen, and tackles in general make more than guards.

Even then, if you're the Eagles, you'd probably like to see Andrews come back and play a little before you start talking about his contract.

One possible complicating factor -- though we all assume that Shawn's brother, Stacy Andrews, is going to play right tackle, Eagles coach Andy Reid held out the possibility of playing Stacy at his former position, left guard, during Sunday's Jason Peters press conference. That could make Shawn the right tackle, and give him some kind of platform for a contract review.

The 11.5 sacks stat -- the number that Jason Peters allegedly gave up last season -- has become a big talking point after the Eagles' acquisition of their new left tackle. Here's a link that's making the rounds, to a Bills message board that if you scroll down, has a poster who has taken the time to post video links of each sack, along with his notation about whether Peters deserved to be charged. (Guy's probably waiting for the snow to melt. Or the Sabres to make the playoffs, whichever comes first.)

If in the right mental and physical state, Shawn Andrews is a phenomenal offensive lineman, we all know that. But before he gets a new deal, he needs to show that his mental and physical concerns are part of the past. If he does that in 2009, then he can talk contract. But any move to demand new terms before he shows he's the same player is just silly.

This sort of things simply amazes me. I hope these reports are unfounded. Did the Eagles ask for some of the money back last year when he didn't show up for camp, then came in depressed, then stayed in CA instead of the Nova Care Complex for rehab, then missed the entire season, etc., etc., etc. Nobody is holding a gun to these guys head's when then sign these extensions. That is why i gave the utmost respect for guys like Sheldon Brown.

Pure speculation. His agent DENIED that he wanted a new contract and said he'd show up to conditioning. What about that says "I want a new contract"?

First, has it hit Eagles fans that Banner and Laurie are paying two offensive line men MORE THAN $100,000,000. Not what cheap penny pinchers do. Second, tackles are the highest paid people after the QB. Period. This to me is the media trying to gin up another story.

Maybe we can send Les Bowen to Oakland for a 7th rounder? We don't need his distractions around the team this year.

He might now that you mentioned it. Try not thinking about donuts right now. See, you can't, can you? Why can't we just let these guys play football? Writers always have to drum up some drama. I'd like for the Eagles to be great on the field and absolutely boring off the field. When did football become everyone's weekend soap opera.

Shawn gotten paid for not showing up to work for quite some time now. Anyone else out there having that kink of luck. Not me. Philly reporters are doing all the talking, not Shawn. Does that surprise anyone. Not me.

One thing I'll never understand is why athletes and contracts aren't the same as everyone else. The reason you sign a contract is because you agree to do a certain amount of time/work for a certain amount of money. You made the decision to sign it and $35 million to play football isn't such a bad deal, especially at a time where your every day American has no job stability. Athletes need to stop being so selfish and actually appreciate their careers and the ridiculous amounts of money they make for playing a game.

I'm going to hold out this year until the Eagles offer me some sort of guaranteed money to attend their games. Don't expect me to be in Lehigh until I get my money either. Talk to my agent.

Shouldn't we wait until there is actually a player/agent stating that there is a problem with his contract before we worry about one?

What a rediculous article......he MIGHT not like comparing pay checks!!?? There has been nothing from Andrews or his agent that has in any way indicated that he is unhappy with his contract so this is basically a BS article to stir up controversy that doesn't exist! Eagles trade and sign for a great LT, the draft is next weekend and we get this garbage to read?

DN reports "some speculation" (no source, of course). Then the Inky can comment. Then the DN can comment on the comment. Full employment for sports "writers'.
Comment removed.

Shawn stole a years salary from the Eagles last year through no fault of the Eagles. Let him prove this year with his play he is worth a bigger contract. What a pleasant problem that would be for Banner.

Oh heavens. Shawn, grow up. You signed a contract. Play a whole season , injury and emotionally free to aid your bro and Peters and then you can see if a renewal is a deal. These brats that make millions without producing are sickening. Let the OL protect and help win games into the playoffs and see if you actually do the job before whining. You sound like all the unions I belonged to!!

The most work done on this article was by the Bills fan in the link provided, who researched each of Peters' sacks last year. Great effort by that fan, another poor effort by this sports reporter, who could learn a lesson about providing relevant information from that fan.

hey Les--why don't you get on the real story that ESPN is reporting that Sheldon Brown has asked to be traded instead of speculating what's on a player's mind.

Ryan, Shawn Andrews doesn't beat up women. And he has actually done something in his career. Horrible comparison. Depression is much different that just being a total ahole.

Hey Les, stick to the Flyers. I expect more from you than to makeup a bogus article to stir the pot. Any by the way, thanks for wiping out my original post.

as these philadelphia sports writer create a problem about salaries paid to certain players i ask; 'what's new'. that's about what they are good for, stiring up controversey. the other side of this is, if andrews is 'upset', why have him play. after he starts playing, have him play tackle where he'll be paid more than a guard. in any event, this whole controversey is 'made up'. take it for what it's worth, nothing.

So, the Eagles go above and beyond the get 2 of his "peeps" to surround him to make him feel better mentally, but all it does it make him unhappy because he doesnt make as much as them?? What are we, in third grade?? Its time for all these people to grow up and realize they make MILLIONS of dollars. I know they earn it, but lets grow up, play a good season, and see how things pan out. Sillyness.

As a season ticket holder I hope this is not true, Like "The_Kid" says, 14 games missed and severe depression does not a new contract make. Lets see some production and less complaining!

Raj, Les wrote that the agent denied wanting a new contract LAST year so get your facts straight. Les is not dishonorable in his work, to answer many of you. There is a good possibility there is some discontent by the agent now, given his ack of denial NOW. So all he's doing is is following up what looks like an issue. And by the way, don't shoot the messenger. There's no way a sportswriter is going to inflame a player into wanting more money. Their agents do a great job of that already, and the players are always looking for a bigger paycheck.

Maybe I just don't get or contracts are like records now, are contracts made to be broken or are they supposed to be binding? It sure seems as if the pamperd athletes today have no concept of what a contract is. It's so disgusting the way these guys moan and groan about the millions they make isn't enough. Personally I don't think these jerks deserve to breath the same air that you and I do! I really can't believe that some of you actually think these guys have a legit argument, they play a game have you lost your mind and touch with reality? Like I said maybe I'm the one missing something here!

WAH. I'm a millionaire. Cry for me people, please. I can't afford to feed my family. Anyone who comes out at this moment in time and cries because they make 5 million a year is completely cut off from reality. Just be happy man, people are starving!
