Dobbs signs 2-year deal with Phillies

The Phillies signed Greg Dobbs to a 2-year deal worth $2.25 million, avoiding his first 2 years of salary arbitration.

Dobbs, 30, hit .301 with nine home runs and 40 RBI in 128 games last season. As a pinch-hitter, he batted .355 with two home runs and 16 RBI and led the big leagues in pinch hits (22) and finished second in RBI. Dobbs’ 22 pinch hits set a Phillies; single-season record.

During his two seasons with the Phillies, Dobbs has batted .327 as a pinch-hitter with four home runs and 34 RBI.

“Over the past two seasons, Greg has been one of the best pinch-hitters in the game and has also contributed significantly as a third baseman,” assistant general manager Scott Proefrock said in a statement.

Dobbs has a career average of .276 with 21 home runs and 127 RBI in 370 games with the Mariners (2004-06) and Phillies (2007-08). He was claimed off waivers by the Phillies in January of 2007.

Dobbs' signing leaves the Phillies with seven players still eligible for salary arbitration. The Phillies and the players will exchange salary figures by Monday and then hearings are scheduled to begin Feb. 1.

    Signing Dobbs is as easy a decision as a human can make. It's like deciding who should lead off game 5 part 2. Oh wait

    ...perhaps not as easy as you say RJ17. I like Dobbs and appreciate what he contributes. But, he was cut by a 100 loss team three years ago and was overmatched against certain pitchers last year, especially in the playoffs. He is more valuable as a pinch-hitter than almost any other LH pinch hitter in the league, but really can't be a starter at any position on a winning club. So, good for the Phils and good for him - but this is a lot of money to lock up a pre-arbitration LH pinch hitter. Not really just a no-brainer, but definitely a sign that these Phils are more willing to spend money on role players than previous teams have been.

    lets not imply that dobbs shouldve led off part 2 instead of jenkins...if maddon had a triple digit IQ, he would have removed balfour and manuel would then have burned jenkins. you wouldnt want to burn dobbs in the 6th. and mcbride is right, this is a lot of money for a player who cant hit lefties at all and who only has an average OBP vs righties.

    Wow, are you 2 serious? "Alot of money" Just over a million dollars for a guy who had the most pinch hits in the league is not alot of money in baseball. Yeah, salaries are down this year i know, but still thats the market. Gabe Kapeler who retired, and then came back and played about 25 games or something just signed for 1 million for a year. I think with the revenue the Phils brought in this past year, they can afford it. RJ is right, no brainer.

    Easy move here. Dobbs has been productive when given his opportunities and is a class act. Paying him $1.25 million a year is not a huge salary for someone as valuable and versatile as Dobbs. How many games did he win the Phils last year? I'd say at least three.

    Dobbs was overmatched in the playoffs? The guy was 7-14 in the playoffs this year. And I don't know if he is as horrible against lefties as everyone thinks. Manuel only gave the guy 10 plate appearances against them in '08, and he's a lifetime .250 hitter against them (in 55 PA).

    Cant believe you guys are battlilng about who should have batted when et al. Hey, we WON and Dobbs was a big part of the championship season. Lets get serious about more important things like AJ's wedding or Baskett's bachelor party.

    seriously mick, what is going on above? We won, the right moves were made. So Taguchi was a terrible move for the season we all agree, but my goodness Dobbs was the best pinch-hitter in the game last season, a season in which WE WON the chanpionship. Why don't we talk about whether Chan Ho, J.A., or Kendrick will be the 5th man in the rotation?

    Slovak, I don't think he was 7-14 in the playoffs. I don't think he even 7 ABs in the playoffs. He was 7-14 during the stretch run. Anyway, this is a good signing. One more piece of the puzzle taking care of.
