The Eagles' apparent lack of interest in signing Justin Fargas makes better sense now that Mike Bell, one of the other solid veteran complementary running backs on the market, is scheduled to visit NovaCare today, agent Josh Luchs confirmed.

Bell, who also has visited Seattle, is a restricted free agent. The Saints tendered him at the lowest level, meaning they have seven days to match any offer he gets, but they receive no compensation should they decline. Despite all the talk about RFA movement going into free agency, nobody has inked one to an offer sheet yet. Will the Eagles be first?

Well, Bell is a 26-year-old (27 in April), low mileage back with inside running chops. He showed he could catch the ball out of the backfield as a 2006 rookie with the Broncos (20 catches, 179 yards), hasn't been used much that way since. As we noted last week, the Birds really need a veteran complement to Shady McCoy. Bell can pick up third-and-1 for you. He led the Saints in carries (172, for 654 yards and 5 touchdowns) despite being on the field for just 18 percent of their plays last season. In a deep backfield, he carved out a strong role.

Question is, what would you have to offer him to get the Saints to decline to match? Could be we're about to find out.

If Bell can play special teams he would be a good pickup. Still young, big enough to block, can catch. McCoy and Weaver would still be main ball carriers.

soulman- special teams?! surely this is a hank baskett joke. if not, that's an out-there comment. by the way, bell seems to be a pretty good idea for our backfield.

Usually, if a guy is not a starter he should be able to play special teams.

Bell would be a nice rotation guy at RB behind McCoy.

I guess, but unless he is doing the returning (unlikely) I dont see the point in running Bell out there, yknow?

If you really want him, they can make it so the Saints can't or won't match without overpaying. Use the poison pill like the Vikes did when they signed Steve Hutchinson from the Seahawks. Just guarantee the entire contract if he plays 3 games in New Orleans. Or write the contract to have a a large bonus due if he plays in New Orleans

I thought the Offense proformed quite well last year, it was the defense that had the issues right? This organization has never been able to truly take a look at itself and correctly gauge its weakness. For example, for how long did we just need a grade A reciever? Finally McNabb gets some weapons and he has a good offensive season. Only now, Westbrook is gone and the defense is softer than cotton. The FO just stubbornly refused to fix its glaring weaknesses. I gotta tell you, as a life-long fan, that is absolutely MADDENING!

Better than nothing. The moment we passed on Peppers and Rolle, we knew the Birds weren't going to make much of a splash this offseason. Bell, solid veteran but not too old, can also catch, we can do a lot worse. With Weaver and McKoy, it'd make sense to go cheap at RB. I do think we need at least 1 more FA signing on the O-line or at LB, though. Don't want to depend on the draft too much.
