Last week's Eagles' loss to the Cowboys was televised in primetime on NBC, meaning it was a chance for the national media to observe the two teams.

And in the Birds' case, the sports scribes across the country were not impressed.

Specifically, Andy Reid has been the subject of quite a bit of criticism this week.

Here's a roundup of some links:

Mike Lombardi of the National Football Post called Reid the "worst game manager in the NFL":

There’s good Andy and there’s bad Andy, and bad Andy always has the red flag. Someone needs to get that flag away from him. His judgment at critical times in critical games makes every Eagles fan doubt his ability to lead this team to a Super Bowl. And even diehard Reid fans know this is an area of great concern.

Jason Whitlock of FoxSports.com calls Reid the most frustrating coach in the NFL:

The Eagles had two eight-play, 30-yard drives in the fourth quarter. Dallas eliminated Philly's big plays and Reid had no counter. The Eagles are 4-13-1 in their last 18 games decided by seven or fewer points. The reason is Reid is a poor strategist.

Yes, I'm letting Donovan McNabb off the hook. But I've watched too many Philly games and seen Reid make bad clock-management and run-game decisions repeatedly. If I could talk with Reid during games, he'd be the Bill Belichick of this era.

ESPN.com's Bill Simmons suggests that Reid get a clock-management closer:

Every coach has a flaw or two. It's impossible for them to be perfect. In Andy Reid's case, he knows how to handle the media, build a roster, come up with game plans, delegate to assistants, get his players playing hard for him, keep them prepared and keep them motivated. It's a eight-step job and he nailed seven of the steps. But he's helpless with clock management -- as we saw last Sunday in painful detail -- and since he's been doing this since the mid-90s, it sure seems like he will always be helpless. It's his Achilles' heel. So why not fix it? Either have the Clock Management Closer come in and stand next to him, or even better, just have Reid actually leave the sideline and head into the locker room like a baseball pitcher. He could even get a standing O on his way out. I would love this. Who wouldn't love this?

And finally, Freddie Mitchell just won't go away. He was on WIP with Howard Eskin and Ike Reese this week, back to his usual schtick of slamming Donovan McNabb.

I thought about listening to the podcast and transcribing it, but the fine folks over at Sports Radio Interviews already took care of that.

Nothing really new. Mitchell pointed to McNabb's inconsistency as the reason the Eagles haven't won a Super Bowl, saying he can be Joe Montana one week and Ryan Leaf the next.

Mitchell added that McNabb has called players and teams around the league, bad-mouthing him.

“You know what it was funny…I was with the Kansas City Chiefs and I was in the elevator with Tony Gonzalez and Trent Green and they’re like ‘Fred, man I never would expect you to be this type of player," Mitchell said. "When Donovan called us and we talked to Donovan he was saying that you’re kinda like a media whore’.  I’m like this dude is calling around and stuff like that."

Freddie Mitchell is a moron. Delusion egomaniacs like Mitchell think the entire world revolves around them. I'm sure McNabb hasn't thought about Mitchell in years.

Sheil, OH MY GOD! Freddie is right and you know it. McNabb's inconsistency IS the reason that they underachieve. It's so obvious. He's just telling the truth. Come on! Is it a coincidence that in the two games they lost McNabb was in a slump? In those games he missed throws that could have been big plays and changed the momentum of the game. Yes, the protection was bad at times but he struggled when he had time to throw as well. McNabb has been erratic since 2005. The offense would be much more consistent with Kevin Kolb at QB. He's a system QB. It's time to turn the offense over to Kolb. The Eagles would cruise along if they got consistently solid play from their QB. This is a talented team.

Been a long-time Donovan supporter but Freddie is right. McNabb IS inconsistent. As I've said many times before, when the guy is hot, the guy is SUPERNOVA. When he's cold, it's equvalent to the frustration associated with pulling the cord on a high-powered lawnmower over and over and the darn thing just won't start. I mean if you could just get the darn thing to start, it would be sweet. Lol. Seriously, I do recommend for people to actually listen to the interview on 610wip.com instead of reading the parts that the writers think are important. When asked if McNabb could win the Super Bowl he gave an honest (yet tortured response) "I don't want to say no, but I wonder if Donovan can string together the 3 to 4 good games in a row to do it". I have to admit, that was probably the most accurate way to say it. Anybody that thinks that there is NO WAY that Donovan can win a Super Bowl is ignoring the fact that Eli Manning won a Super Bowl. The fact is, are the guys around him good enough and can he make the plays that he needs to make when it counts. Recent history says no. Until that changes, when the Eagles head into the fourth quarter behind by more than 3 points, I have already resigned myself to believe that they are not going to win that game and it's time to start thinking about next week. It really sucks that's the case but hey, the recent record speaks for itself and the magic endings have long since passed.

Dsmack is an average QB. Period. He can't lead. He can't engineer a game winning drive. He doesn't know the rules. He can't count to three. He, and that clueless buffoon Reid, had the incredible luck to be on a team that for 10 years had Jimmy Johnson's D, which gave this terrible twosome a short field for a decade. McChump can't put together two good passes, and will thrown anyone under the bus that's within arm's length The only thing more pathetic than 10 years of this garbage are the morons who continue to watch these two and expect a different outcome. Banner and Lurid put out this mediocre junk year after year, call it the "gold standard", and you chumps buy it...

Since Andy Reid was RIGHT about the ball placement, as the refs have all but admitted, how can you rip him for challenging the call?

McNabb IS too canned off the field, and his play is wildly inconsistent. Under 60% for his career in a West Coast offense? That's subpar. Take an inconsistent QB and put him with a poor game-day coach, and the results are what we've got: Super Bowl in 04, out of the playoffs in 05, division winner in 06, out of the playoffs in 07, wildcard team in 08. We are all ready for a change, knowing that McNabb just doesn't have what it takes to win the Super Bowl.

McNabb is like my golf game... the only consistency is inconsistency. He's a head case... potentially great skills, but his brain gets in the way. Andy is an enigma when it comes to management of the game, but one could conclude that he is driven by McNabb's inconsistency. Loyalty is great thing and missing from most players and many coaches. In pro ball, the game is about entertainment and money. Perhaps loyalty has no place in pro football?

Watch out Andy? Gimme a break! The problem is McNabb not Andy. Sure, Andy has flaws but if he had a consistent QB to run his offense those flaws would be covered up. I think he drafted the QB that can take him where he wants to go in Kevin Kolb. The frustrating thing is that he'll probably let McNabb play out the rest of the season.

This team just gets deeper and deeper into the dreg of controversy that it just really starts to get old, going to get by with its rabid fans and fall into that long abyss of no championship like the Flyers for 25 plus years....thank goodness for the city of phila and its sports teams...no bigger fan than I.... but the eagles and their' 'gold standard' and 'big red' is getting OLD real fast

One-play Freddie - why is anybody even giving him air time? Oh, yeah, nutty sound bites. The national media IS finally catching up to what we already know about Reid's clueless game coaching - time managment, challenges, getting plays in, run/pass balance. Love the next day press conferences where he says "we probably could have run the ball more." He really has lived on Jimmy Johnson's defenses. McNabb is just the wrong QB for a WC offense. No touch and no short range accuracy. I'm not annointing Kolb off of two games but from what I've seen of him in preseason games, he may not have McNabb's gun or range but he has a very accurate arm and can hit people on the run for YAC. That's what you need if you're gonna run this kind of offense. Time's yers.

No Fred but the other critics were spot on with play calling, time management, and dealing with a hurry up offense. As to the upcoming games, the Eagles simply should be the ones who have to win. They will lose in San Diego unless they can have some offense to offset the huge day Rivers will have in Qualcom. They are not that good a running team, but Rivers does not throw the ball into the dirt.

Freddie Mitchell has to look in the mirror and realize he was a bust. #5 is what he is. Up and down. He takes credit when we win, and no blame when he is off. He would be much more of a fan favorite if he stood up after games and said " I need to play better." I hear big Ben day this when the Stellers lose. Being honest about limitations would help Andy too.

Andy's has to ask the big question: Would I rather win with a go to power runner that gets me 100 yards on 27 carries and helps us control the clock late in the game ? Or,stick with my dink and dunk pass routine late into a close game and run the chance of giving the ball back for the opposition to get a go ahead score ?? Ahhhhhhhh..
