Phillies’ Utley wins fourth straight Silver Slugger Award

Phillies second baseman Chase Utley won his fourth straight National League Silver Slugger Award on Thursday.

He is the first NL second baseman to win the award in four consecutive seasons since Ryne Sandberg won it in 5 straight years (1988-92). In Phillies history, only Mike Schmidt (six) has won more Silver Slugger Awards than Utley. Schmidt also holds the club record for consecutive awards, winning five straight from 1980 to '84.

Utley led all NL second basemen this season in several offensive categories, including runs scored (112), on-base percentage (.399), slugging percentage (.510) and extra-base hits (63). He was tied for the NL lead among second basemen in home runs (31) and was second in walks with a career-high 88.

He also was 23-for-23 in stolen bases, becoming the 10th Phillie ever to have 20 or more home runs and stolen bases in the same season.

If only some other members of the team, other than Utley and Lee showed up against the Yankees, we might have had a parade. I thought going in that this team wouldn't be intimidated by the pinstripes but they were.

Congrats Utley..you truly are the epitome of what a great baseball should be...all hustle, you let your playing do the talking to the media...if you ask him he would rather trade all four of his silver sluggers in for one gold glove
