Sources confirmed published reports that Notre Dame defensive coordinator Bob Diaco interviewed Monday for Temple's coaching position.

The Owls are seeking a replacement for Steve Addazio, who left Dec. 4 to take the head coaching job at Boston College.

Diaco also reportedly interviewed for the California and Boston College jobs.

The 39-year-old recently received the Broyles Award, given to the nation's top college assistant coach. Some say his coaching is a major reason top-ranked Notre Dame is playing second-ranked Alabama for the BCS championship on Jan. 7.

The Fighting Irish (12-0) have the Football Bowl Subdivision's top-ranked scoring defense with an average of 10.3 points allowed per game.

Temple defensive coordinator Chuck Heater, Eagles defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, New York Giants assistant offensive line coach Matt Rhule, former Florida International coach Mario Cristobal, Ohio State running backs coach Stan Drayton, and Miami defensive coordinator Mike D'Onofrio also interviewed for the position, according to sources.

One reported candidate for the job, San Jose State coach Mike MacIntyre, accepted the job at Colorado on Monday. Bowling Green coach Dave Clawson withdrew his name from consideration.

Boise State on tap

Temple's 2013 Big East season will feature a home game against national power Boise State, the conference announced Tuesday.

Dates and times for all Big East games are expected to be announced in February.

Temple is set to play in the six-team West Division with Boise State, Houston, Memphis, San Diego State and Southern Methodist. It will play crossover East Division games at Rutgers and at home against Central Florida and Connecticut.

The Owls' 2013 Big East home schedule has Boise State, Central Florida, Connecticut and Houston going to Lincoln Financial Field. Temple's league road schedule consists of Memphis, Rutgers, San Diego State and Southern Methodist.

The Owls' nonconference home schedule features Fordham (Sept. 14) and Army (Oct. 19). Temple opens the season at Notre Dame on Aug. 31. It has six home games and six on the road next season.

Home: Fordham, Army, Boise State, Central Florida, Connecticut, Houston.

Road: Notre Dame, Idaho, Memphis, Rutgers, San Diego State, Southern Methodist.

Bradshaw a 'class act'

Temple athletic director Bill Bradshaw has a lot to do with Albany punter Paul Layton's intent to transfer to North Broad Street. Layton, who has one season of eligibility left, will receive a degree from Albany this weekend and begin taking graduate course at Temple next month.

"Bill Bradshaw met personally with me and my parents, and what a class act he is," said Layton, who will have immediate eligibility as a graduate student. "He assured me that Temple University was committed to me and that my scholarship would be honored no matter who the next head coach was."
