CINCINNATI - Eagles wide receiver Jeremy Maclin suffered a contusion of his left shoulder in the second quarter of Friday night's game against the Cincinnati Bengals and did not return.

After the game, Eagles coach Andy Reid said that Maclin was "OK" and that X-rays were negative.

Maclin suffered the injury when he caught a pass from quarterback Kevin Kolb on third and 4. Maclin made the grab short of the first-down marker and was met head on by Bengals cornerback Johnathan Joseph.

Maclin stayed on his feet and suffered another blow, but dropped to his knees on the Cincinnati sideline.

The second-year receiver left the game with three receptions for 18 yards, with his longest gain being 8 yards.

It's the second significant injury for Maclin this preseason. He hyperextended his knee early at training camp and missed a week of practice with a bone bruise. But he returned much earlier than initially expected.

With Maclin sidelined, Hank Baskett filled in opposite DeSean Jackson at receiver.

Eagles center A.Q. Shipley left in the third quarter with a contusion of the left knee, and tackle King Dunlap suffered an ankle sprain.

Allen instructed

The education of Nate Allen continues.

The rookie free safety wasn't involved in any of the six plays the Eagles' first-team defense played last week against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

But the Bengals went at Allen early and often Friday night and the results were mixed. On back-to-back plays, Allen was steamrolled by Cincinnati running back Cedric Benson when he ran for 11 yards in the first quarter.

But the rookie rebounded on the ensuing first down when he went untouched on a blitz and forced quarterback Carson Palmer into an ill-advised pass that was intercepted by Eagles cornerback Dimitri Patterson.

The Eagles' defense gave up a boatload of yards in the first half - 213 total - but it did force two turnovers, Patterson's pick and a nifty interception by Quintin Mikell. The Eagles safety caught a second-quarter pass that deflected off Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco when he was sandwich-tackled by linebacker Stewart Bradley and Patterson.

Samuel sits

Cornerback Asante Samuel did not play Friday night. Joselio Hanson started in his place after Samuel injured his hamstring Tuesday. The team has not disclosed the severity of Samuel's injury, though it is not believed to be serious.

Also sitting out last night were centers Nick Cole (knee) and Jamaal Jackson (knee), guard Todd Herremans (foot), cornerback David Pender (illness), defensive end Victor Abiamiri (knee), running back Mike Bell (calf) and cornerback Macho Harris (hamstring).
