Penn State misses a few on signing day

The good news for Penn State football fans on national signing day is that superstar quarterback Terrelle Pryor is not signing yet and is planning an official visit to State College.

"I had my mind set last night that I was going to go ... but Penn State is hitting me hard and I don't think I gave them a fair chance and I want to take a visit there," Pryor said at a news conference at his high school in Jeanette, Pa. "Just check out their campus. Just give him [coach Joe Paterno] a chance, he's a great guy. I just think I should go there."

Pryor acknowleged that his father is "in love" with Penn State.

"Me and my dad had a battle of differences, he wants me to go over it," Pryor said.

The bad news, however, is that the Nittany Lions also struck out a couple of times and could be looking at a thin recruiting class, especially at the skill positions on offense. Penn State signed 14 players, including just one running back and one wide receiver. They did not sign a quarterback, pending Pryor's decision.

Michael Shaw, a running back from Trotwood, Ohio, who had committed to Penn State over the summer and visited campus in December, switched his allegiance to Michigan.

Shaw, a 6-foot, 185-pounder, was scheduled to announce his intentions at a morning news conference at his school. He delayed an announcement until the afternoon, saying he needed a little more time to decide.

Shaw visited Michigan in late January.

"Penn State was my dream school, it really was," Shaw told Rivals.com "But when that dream became a reality, I found that Michigan was actually the best place for me and I actually decided that right there in [his high school coach's] office.

"It was the longest two hours of my life today, but in the end I feel God has a plan for me."

Penn State also lost out on Deion Walker, a highly touted wide receiver from Virginia. Walker commited to Notre Dame in January, but accepted letters of intent from Penn State and Tennessee.

He announced this morning that he was honoring his commitment to Notre Dame, signing his letter with the Irish.

The Nittany Lions seemed to have one more chance, but offensive tackle Corey Lewis from East Stroudsburg South High chose Illinois. Lewis committed to Virginia in June, but got late interest from Penn State and the Illini.

Searing is a great critics' word that must be used rarely and carefully. So much film stuff that's supposed to shock your soul is just special effects that may cook emotions, but doesn't leave them juicy.
