Wednesday's South Jersey roundup: Paul VI wins a thriller

Abaigeal Babore led the Paul VI girls’ basketball team with 15 points Wednesday and Maniya Custis added 14 as the the Eagles held off Bishop Eustace, 71-69, in double overtime in the South Non-Public A opening round.

Danielle Donoghue and Savannah Holt tallied 17 points apiece to lead Ocean City past GCIT, 57-22, in South Group 3 quarterfinal play. Emma Finnegan added 10 points for the Red Raiders in the home win.

DarRique Smith poured in 25 points as Woodbury edged Wildwood, 51-50, in the South Group 1 quarterfinals. Kayla Rone added 17 points in the win for Thundering Herd. Maddie McCracken finished with a game-high 33 points for the Warriors in the home loss.

In other South Group 1 action, Ashanti Taylor scored a game-high 18 points to lift fourth-seeded Palmyra past fifth-seeded Pitman, 47-32, at home. Julianne Mackafee chipped in 13 points for the Panthers.

Kylar Coughlin scored 19 points to lift Gloucester to a 35-23 win against Salem at home. Elizabeth Hudock led Salem with 10 points.

Hailey Russell led Riverside with 15 points, but the Rams fell to host Keyport in Central Group 1 quarterfinal action.

Pemberton fell to visiting Hopewell Valley, 50-39, in Central Group 3 quarterfinal action. Shavonne Smith posted 20 points for the Hornets in the loss. Meggy Wiley led all scorers with 23 points in Hopewell Valley’s road win.

Boys’ Basketball

Anthony Mitchell poured in 26 points to lift Glassboro to a 75-62 win against visiting Pitman in South Group 1 quarterfinal action. Kyree Myers scored 15 points and Nizair Scott added 14 points in the Bulldogs’ win.

In another South Group 1 quarterfinal contest, Jawan Roane led Penns Grove with 30 points in a 78-55 win against visiting Palmyra.

Josh Jackson led Northern Burlington with 23 points as the Greyhounds held off host Hopewell Valley, 58-52, in the Central Group 3 quarterfinals. Khalif Lewis finished with 16 points in the win.

Deonte Woodbury scored 16 points as Burlington City topped Bound Brook, 74-44, in Central Group 1 quarterfinal action. Jeremy Young added 15 points and D’Andre Thurmond chipped in 14 in the Blue Devils’ home win. Jassiem Moore finished with a game-high 21 points for Bound Brook in the loss.

In other Central Group 1 action, Jabril Enmond tallied 18 points in Florence’s 53-39 win against Riverside. Nasir Carthan and Kahlil Lewis posted 11 points apiece.
