Neshaminy slips by CB South in overtime
Neshaminy managed to slip by CB South.
Rarely has a third-quarter tackle been so important in an overtime thriller.
Friday night, however, a third-quarter hustle play by Neshaminy junior defensive back Cory Joyce kept his team alive against host Central Bucks South.
Joel Stills had the eventual game-winning, 7-yard touchdown run in Neshaminy's 21-14 overtime victory.
And sophomore quarterback Brody McAndrew hit Mike Garlick for an 11-yard score to tie the game at 14 with 34.7 left in regulation.
But when CB South speedster Ryan Watson broke free with the Titans ahead, 14-7, in the third, Joyce chased him down from behind with about 4 minutes left in the frame.
"I just had backside and he broke it," Joyce said. "We work pursuit angles every week in practice. I just ran as hard as I could and chased him down."
The Neshaminy defense held and the Titans missed a 35-yard field goal on the drive, and never scored again.
Asked if he was surprised that he caught Watson, Joyce just smiled.
"Ah, I got a little bit of speed," he said with a laugh.
Speed thrilled in front of a packed crowd on homecoming for the Titans.
Stills, a senior running back, finished with 74 yards and a score on 18 carries.
Junior running back Savion Hebron added 65 yards and a score, including a 47-yard touchdown run to give Neshaminy (6-1) an early 7-0 edge.
The Titans (5-2) responded with trickery after quarterback Josh Consoletti caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from receiver Jerry Letherland to give CB South a 14-7 edge at intermission.
Watson finished with 101 yards on 17 carries. Consoletti finished 13 of 25 for 127 yards and a score.
Stills scored on the second play of overtime.
