Carter Regitz is the anchor of a Downingtown East offensive line that Mike Matta says is the best he has ever coached.
“If you watch him on film, he’s devastating,” Matta said matter-of-factly. “He’s a three-year starter and a good leader.”
On Friday night, with Regitz continuing his stellar play at left guard, the visiting Cougars racked up 306 rushing yards on 58 attempts and eased past Ches-Mont League National Division rival Bishop Shanahan, 34-7, at Jack Mancini Field.
“We pretty much outmuscled them from the beginning,” Regitz said. “We had a strong push going on.”
The 6-foot-2, 260-pound Regitz, who doubles as a defensive lineman in goal-line situations, gave up wrestling and rugby to focus on football.
Brassir Stocker (14 carries for 108 yards), Garvey Jonassaint (21 for 85), and Tim Aivado (15 for 70) benefited from the rock-solid effort by Regitz & Co.
“That’s our three-headed monster,” Regitz said. “They all have different running styles.”
Matta said Stocker is a “homerun hitter.” Jonassaint is a “balanced runner,” and Aivado is “the hammer.”
East, ranked No. 4 in Southeastern Pennsylvania by the Inquirer, improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in league play. Number 24 Shanahan, which was trying to beat East for the first time since 2014, slipped to 4-1 and 1-1.
Regitz is joined up front by center Weston Menzie (6-2, 260), fellow guard Jack Sheerer 6-1, 245), tackles Garrett Farmer (6-4, 280) and Sam Hudson (6-4, 255), and tight end Connor Noble (6-2, 200).
Regitz, whose junior brother, Stuart, plays outside linebacker for the Cougars. Menzie, and Farmer are returning starters.
In the first quarter, Jonassaint capped a 12-play, 65-yard scoring drive with an 8-yard burst. His 2-yard run early in the second finished a 12-play 44-yard series and put East in front, 14-0.
Soon after, Stocker broke free for a 40-yard TD to increase the lead to 21-0. The Eagles responded with an 18-play, 61-yard drive that closed with Dan DiBeneditto’s 4-yard TD pass to Tom Waite.
East clinched the victory in the fourth quarter on Jonassaint’s third scoring run of the night, a 1-yard dive, and Aivado’s 2-yard run.
The Cougars defense limited the hosts to 31 yards rushing and 53 passing through three quarters.
East is scheduled to host West Chester East in National Division action Thursday, while Shanahan is slated to visit West Chester Henderson Friday.
