Bud Gardler funeral services set for Monday

Funeral services for retired Cardinal O'Hara High School basketball coach Bud Gardler will be Monday, Aug. 20, at the high school. Viewing will be from 12 to 2:30 p.m., with the funeral at 2:30.

Funeral services for retired Cardinal O'Hara High School basketball coach Bud Gardler will be Monday, Aug. 20, at the high school, with the approval of the archdiocese.

Viewing will be from noon to 2:30 p.m., with the funeral at 2:30.

Gardler, 72, who died Wednesday after a long illness, coached O'Hara from 1977-2008 after coaching Bishop Kenrick High from 1969-75. In between, he was an assistant coach at American University. He was the all-time winningest boys' basketball coach in Catholic League history for some time, until Speedy Morris surpassed him in 2011. Among his players were some notable future coaches, including Connecticut women's head coach Geno Auriemma and Penn men's head coach Steve Donahue.
