Gwynedd Mercy thumps O'Hara in PIAA girls' lacrosse

As the final two members of the Gwynedd Mercy lacrosse team left the field Tuesday, they carried a speaker that played a familiar ironic tune.

Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust" could be heard as the pair exited after the Monarchs dispatched Cardinal O'Hara, 17-3, in the first round of the PIAA Class 2A playoffs.

It wasn't a show of disrespect. The volume was low and most - if not all - of the O'Hara players and staff had long since left the field.

Instead, it seemed more a celebration of progress because the Monarchs had grown accustomed to their season ending with mouths full of dust.

"This win was a great experience for us because we've never made it this far before," said Danielle Senour.

Later, she added: "It's just exciting to see from my freshman year to now. . . . I got to see it for four years, and the program is going to continue to build after this. So it's just exciting to see because we never thought we'd make it this far. Not only getting this far, but knowing we can continue to go is just a great feeling."

Senour, who will play at Drexel next season, finished with four goals, while Hailey Durkin and Kendall Seifert each added four. Gabby Tanner stopped six shots in goal.

The Monarchs, she explained, hadn't even made it past the first round of the District 1 playoffs during her first three years.

The No. 4-seeded Monarchs led, 10-0, at the half and 16-1 before the top-seeded Lions from District 12 added two late goals.

Ana Diritia, Molly Grady, and Julia Ferraiolo each tallied for the Lions, while their goaltender, Jackie Peterson stopped nine shots.

Gwynedd Mercy will play Bishop Shanahan on Saturday at a time and locale to be determined.

What is known, however, is that Senour and Co. aren't just content with making it out of the first round.

"Our goal wasn't just to make it to the first round," said Senour, who praised coach Deb Lawlor for building the program. "We know we can go further, and I think this win was a great start for us and it will keep the momentum rolling."
